Geotechnical aspects of landfill construction and design

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Geotechnical aspects are essential factors to be considered during design and construction of waste
piles. Basic geotechnical aspects relate to slope stability, settlement or permeability, including those of
the structural elements such as the stabilizing elements, anchors or sealing layers and drainage blankets.

Identifying Opportunities for improvement whilst ensuring waste facilities are compliant with
environmental licenses and regulations, as well as workplace health and safety (WH&S) legation.

Minimize the environmental footprint of the Region’s landfills through provision of extending
operational life span of landfill and improved management of airspace and site operations.

Rockhampton Region population is approximately 83,000 and is expected to grow to 94,000 by 2024.
With growing population comes increased waste generation and landfill airspace challenges. Just over
69,000 tones were buried at Rockhampton Region’s landfills in 2013/2014 financial year. According to
Waste Reduction and Recycling Strategy (RRWR), council will achieve an overall reduction in waste to
landfill of 15%.
