SEASONING OF TIMBER
• “Seasoning reduces the moisture present in the wood to the
desirable extent.”
• Advantages:
– Becomes hard and durable.
– Resistances to shock and stresses are increased.
– Workability is improved.
– Density is reduced.
– Does not warp, shrink and catch fire.
– Defects like twisting, bowing, and splitting do not occur.
– Ability to take-up polish and paint is improved.

SEASONING OF TIMBER
• Natural or Air Seasoning: 
– Best seasoning technique
– Duration: 1-5 years

• Water Seasoning: Wood is to be immersed in


flowing water for a period of 2-3 weeks.

• Artificial or Kiln Seasoning: 

• Other Seasoning processes:


– Boiling
– Electric seasoning
– Chemical seasoning
– Combination of Air and Kiln seasoning
