Design of Two-way Slab
1. Design Data
fck = 20 N/mm2
fy = 500 N/mm2
Dimensions of the slab (c/c distance betn supports),
Length of short span, lx = 3.2 m
Length of long span, ly = 3.81 m
Width of the supporting beam, = 230 mm
Clear cover to main reinforcement = 20 mm
Assume dia. of reinforcement steel = 10 mm
Edge condition – “Two adjacent edges discontinuous”
2. Selection of preliminary depth of slab
The span to depth ratio with Fe 5 0 0 is taken from cl. 24.1, Note 2 of IS 456 as
0.8( 40) = 32. This gives the minimum effective depth d = 3200/32 = 100 mm. The
total depth D is thus 125 mm.
3. Design loads, bending moments and shear forces
2
Dead load of slab (1 m width) = 0.125(25) = 3.125 kN/m
2
Dead load of floor finish (given) = 1.2 kN/m
2
Factored dead load = 1.5(4.325) = 6.49 kN/m
2
Factored live load (given) = 6.0 kN/m
2
Total factored load = 12.49 kN/m
The coefficients of bending moments and the bending moments Mx and My per unit
width (positive and negative) are determined as per cl. D-1.1 and Table 26 of IS 456 for
the case 4, “Two adjacent edges discontinuous” and presented in Table 1. The ly / lx for this
problem is 3.81/3.2 = 1.2.

Positive moment at 0.045 5.76 0.035 4.48

Maximum shear force in either direction is :
Vu = w(lx/2) = 12.49 (3.2/2) = 19.982 kN/m
4. Determination/checking of the effective depth and total depth of slab
Using the higher value of the maximum bending moments in x and y directions from
Table 1, we get:
2
Mu,lim = R,lim bd
6 3 1/2
or d = [(7.67)(10 )/{2.66(10 )}] = 5 3 . 7 mm,
2 2 2
where 2.66 N/mm is the value of R,lim for f y = 500 N/mm and f ck = 20 N/mm .
Since, this effective depth is less than 100 mm assumed in Step 2, we retain d =
100 mm and D = 125 mm.
5. Depth of slab for shear force
2
Table 19 of IS 456 gives the values of c = 0.28 N/mm when the lowest percentage of steel
is provided in the slab. However, this value needs to be modified by multiplying with k of cl.
40.2.1.1 of IS 456. The value of k for the total depth of slab as 125mm is 1.3. so the value of
2
c is 1.3(0.28) = 0.364 N/mm .
2
Table 20 of IS 456 gives c, max = 2.8 N/mm . The computed shear stress v = Vu/bd =
19.982/100 = 0.199N/mm.
Since v < c < c, max , the effective depth of the slab as 100mm and the total depth as
125mm are safe.
