I. Goals/Objectives/Standard(s)
A. Goal: Students will be able to identify similarities and differences between themselves and their peers.
B. Objective: Students will look at two people and identify qualities that are similar and different among them
through an extended written response activity.
C. Standards:
NCSS: Individual Development and Identity
IAS: K.3.6 Identify and compare similarities and differences in families, classmates, neighbors and
neighborhoods, and ethnic and cultural groups.
II. Management Plan
a. Materials:
 Crayons
 pencil
 worksheet and pictures of two animated people
 YouTube link- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ1ygFknjYo&t=60s
b. Time: 35 minutes
c. Space: classroom floor, carpet, desks
d. Behavior: A lot of the students in my class have trouble focusing and sitting still, so I have
incorporated a lot of movement and various activities within my lesson to help keep them engaged
and attentive. I will also utilize the clip chart when necessary to clip up a student who is following
directions. I will also use call and response techniques and a skittles reward system to help manage
behavior.
III. Adaptation to Individual Differences and Diverse Learners—Many of the students in my kindergarten
class need extra guidance during assignments, therefore I will walk around during their individual work time
and assist them without giving them the answers. I will also incorporate some brain breaks so that the
students can stay focused during the lesson.

PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION (CAEP K-6 1.b)

IV. Anticipatory Set (7 minutes)
• I will have the desks and chairs moved to the edge and corners of the room. I will then instruct students to
get into a big circle in the center of the classroom. “Class, Class. I need for you to get into a circle in the
middle of the classroom. I want you to grab hands with the people next to you, then when I say go, let go of
their hands and take 3 steps back.” Allow time for students to get into place.
 Then tell students we are going to play a game. “we are going to play a game, but you have to listen very
carefully. I will say something such as ‘if you have brown hair, switch places with someone else who has
brown hair’. If you know what to do put a hand on your head. Great! Let’s begin!
 “If you have brown eyes, switch places with someone else who has brown eyes.”
 “If you have blonde hair, switch places with someone who has blonde hair”
 “Now this time if you are a boy, I want you to switch places with another boy.”
 “If you have blue eyes, switch places with someone else with blue eyes.”
 “If you are a girl, switch places with another girl.”
 “Great job everyone, now I need you all to come sit on the carpet. Kori can pass out a skittle to everyone
who is quiet and sitting on their pockets.”

V. Purpose: “Today we are going to talk about what makes us similar and what makes us different.”

VI. Lesson Presentation (Input/Output) (15 minutes)

 “I need Kylynn to stand up here next to me. When you look at us what do you see that is the same?” Allow
time for a few responses. “Very good observations! Kylynn you may sit down. Now Dermalin, come stand
by me. Class, tell me what you see is different between us?” Allow time for response. “Thank you Dermalin,
you may sit down.” (5 minutes)
 Now class, we have talked a lot about what is the same between us, and about what makes us different. I am
going to show you a short video that talks about some more differences between us. Pay close attention to
what makes us different. (while students are watching have Mrs. Buettner help put the desks back)”. (2
minutes)
 “Everyone in this class is different in some ways and alike in some ways too.”
 “I now want you to find a partner sitting next to you on the carpet, and talk about what is the same and
different about each of you. I will give you two minutes to share.” At the end of two minutes, call on each
pair of students to share. (5-7 minutes)
 After each pair had finished sharing, have them stand up and turn around, and wiggle for 30 seconds to get
their jitters out. Then have them sit back down on the carpet.
(CAEP K-6 3.d)
VII. Check for understanding. (10 minutes)
 After the last pair and share activity, I will readdress the concepts of same and different if students are
confused.
 “Now class I am going to give you a paper. I want you to first color a picture of a friend or classmate. Then
when you are done with that, I want you to write 1 sentence about what is the same about you and the
person you drew. Then 1 sentence about what makes them different from you.”
 “You will have 10 minutes (set timer) to do this. When you are done put your hand on your head and I will
come and check your paper and collect it. Then you may get onto iRead while you wait for your friends to
finish.” (10 minutes)

VIII. Review learning outcomes / Closure (3 minutes) – I will have students gather back onto the carpet
and will place to pictures on the screen. I will then ask the students to raise their hand if they people
have the same hair color, eye color, skin color. This will help me gage if students truly grasp the concept
and assess them.

PLAN FOR ASSESSMENT

Formative:
 Students will participate in a pair and share activity as part of the lesson presentation to help me gage if
they are understanding the concepts.
 Students will complete a handout about the differences and similarities of a friend.
 Students will gather on the carpet for closure and I will have them raise their hands to tell me whether two
pictures have similar hair, eyes, and skin.
