“Midterm Speech”

Topic – The charity that I will be discussing today is Susan G. Komen.

Specific Purpose – The purpose of this speech is to inform the audience about a charity that
supports the elimination of breast cancer, Susan G. Komen.

Thesis Statement – This charity, Susan G. Komen, supports the elimination of breast cancer in
many ways like fundraising, collecting donations, and awareness of the cause.

Introduction
 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime
 Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and the second leading
cause of cancer death among women
 More than 3.3 million survivors are alive to tell their story in the U.S.
 Some members of my family have had breast cancer, but thankfully have survived from it
 Although often forgotten about, and rarer, men can develop breast cancer
 212,324 screenings; 41,695 diagnostics; 37,196 treatment assistance services; and over
500 clinical trials are funded nationally every year because of this foundation
Body
 Mission=Save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing
in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer
 Bank of America is one of their sponsors
 Komen’s Race for the Cure has raised over $2 billion, which has been invested in
research and scientific programs to help end breast cancer once and for all
 On their website, there is an option to “make a declaration” (it can be as long or as short
as you’d like)
o It can be a statement or a promise stating that you will do everything in your
power to end breast cancer
o The purpose of this is to empower individuals to work on transforming their lives
as well as the lives of other people impacted by breast cancer
 This year, they expect to hold 14 international races in 9 countries
o Started small, and now has grown expansively
 Now, over 1 million supporters walk or race each year
o This means almost 140 races around the world!
o Events in each country differ slightly, but they are share the goal of eliminating
breast cancer
 Today, in San Diego, CA, there is a conference to raise awareness for metastatic breast
cancer
o Women connect through shared experiences
 I have previously dealt with this organization
o For my community service group, I needed to raise money for a cause
 I decided to host a bake sale
 Sold breast cancer-themed desserts and items to raise awareness
for this organization
 As a result of this, donated the profits
 October is Breast Cancer Awareness month
o Many people, especially on sports teams, will wear pink in order to show their
support for the cause

Conclusion
 Many charities advocate for the ending of breast cancer, but Susan G. Komen is one of
the most well-known charities that supports breast cancer, so it is easy to get involved
 Breast cancer directly impacts my family, so it will always be important to me
 In some cases, breast cancer can be very aggressive and, if surgery, is necessary, can
greatly affect a women’s self-worth and feelings of femininity
 So, do whatever you can to get involved and help end breast cancer once and for all
