Charity Speech – Christine Collins

Topic – The charity that I will be discussing today is Susan G. Komen.

Specific Purpose – The purpose of this speech is to inform the audience about a charity that
supports the elimination of breast cancer, Susan G. Komen.

Thesis Statement – This charity, Susan G. Komen, supports the elimination of breast cancer in
many ways like fundraising, collecting donations, and awareness of the cause.

Introduction:
 “1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime”
o This is a very high rate, which will hopefully be lowered drastically in the future
 Some members of my family have had breast cancer, but thankfully have survived from it
Body:
 Mission=Save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing
in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer
 Bank of America is one of their sponsors
 Komen’s Race for the Cure has raised over $2 billion, which has been invested in
research and scientific programs to help end breast cancer once and for all
 On their website, there is an option to “make a declaration” (it can be as long or as short
as you’d like)
o It can be a statement or a promise stating that you will do everything in your
power to end breast cancer
o The purpose of this is to empower individuals to work on transforming their lives
as well as the lives of other people impacted by breast cancer
 This year, they expect to hold 14 international races in 9 countries
o Started small, and now has grown expansively
o This means almost 140 races around the world!
o Events in each country differ slightly, but they are share the goal of eliminating
breast cancer

Conclusion – Many charities advocate for the ending of breast cancer. Susan G. Komen is one of
the most well-known charities that supports breast cancer, so it is easy to get involved. Breast
cancer directly impacts my family, so it will always be important to me. In some cases, breast
cancer can be very aggressive and, if surgery, is necessary, can greatly affect a women’s self-
worth and feelings of femininity. So, do whatever you can to get involved and help end breast
cancer once and for all. “Be Bold. Be Fearless. Be More than Pink.”

Thank the audience.
