Sand in Tigray region

The study sites of the sand are characterized by a typical cretaceous sand stone which is the chief
source of the silica sand. According to Solomon (2009) in Ethiopia silica sand occurred in Enticho
sand stone units of Adigrat sand stone group of Tigray around Edaga Hamus, Senkata accumulates
along stream channels and floodplains of rivers and deposits after transported many kilometers
from their sources(s)

The sand site for this research is selected based on the availability of high deposition of sand and
accessibilities after survey done by Negasi Gebremedihn (2015) on the upper and lower sides of
the sites that covers about 9-15 kilometers of the rivers which were found on different areas of
Tigray and Afar region.

Suluh river site latitude and longitudinal locations is, 14029’24” E, 14000’49” N and with an
approximate elevation from sea level of 2235.67 meter respectively.

According to Negasi Gebremedihn (2015) after testing samples of sands from different regions,
He found out that the clay content of the Suluh river is greater than that of others in which He also
stated that the clay will act as a binding agent and the % of clay content available in the Suluh river
sand have an average value of 11.81% thus due to its higher clay content the Suluh river has a less
porosity than that of the Chini, Hazaeti-Berah and Gereb-gba rivers. In turn it enhances the water
non-absorbability of the roof than the other sands and also the shape of the grain of the sand is
round which has a property of greater bond strength and compactability. For thus reasons the Suluh
river sand is selected.

 Sand, dry weighs 1.602 gram per cubic centimeter or 1 602 kilogram per cubic meter, i.e.
its density is equal to 1 602 kg/m³. In Imperial or US customary measurement system,
the Sand, dry density is equal to 100 pound per cubic foot [lb/ft³], or 0.926 ounce per cubic
inch [oz/inch³] .
