SERIES AC CIRCUIT
Quiz No. 11 (Problem Solving)

Course Outcome: Solve electrical circuit problems using relevant formula applying circuit analysis.

Learning Outcome: At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:

1. Analyze DC and AC circuit and network to solve electrical circuit problems by applying the
principles, laws and theorems in circuit analysis.

2. Compare the measured and solved values of electrical parameters to validate the principles,
laws, and theorems in circuit analysis.

Instruction: Read and answer each problem and scenario carefully. Show your solution.

1. Three loads units A, B, and C are connected in parallel and take currents that are respectively 12,
10, and 15 A respectively. Assuming 𝐼𝑎 to be the reference phasor, 𝐼𝑎 leads 𝐼𝑏 by 30° and 𝐼𝑎 lags
by 65°, determine the resulting power factor. Is it leading or lagging?

2. Determine the power angle in the series circuit which contains of R = 25 ohms, L =0.2 H across a
power supply of 200 volts, 30 Hz.

3. Two coils A and B known to have the same resistance are connected in series across a 110 V, 60
Hz line. The current and power delivered by the source are 4.1 A and 300 W, respectively. If the
voltage across coil A is twice that across coil B, calculate the inductance of coil B.

4. A ½ horsepower, 110 V, 60 Hz, single-phase induction motor has an efficiency of 88% and a
power factor of 0.707 lagging at rated load. This motor is to be connected temporarily on a 220V
60 Hz line. Determine the resistance required to be placed in series with the motor in order to
prevent the machine from experiencing overcurrent.

5. A coil draws 1875 watts when connected to a 150 V DC source. It consumes 3072 watts when
used on 240 V, 60 Hz AC source. Find the inductance of the coil.
