RESONANCE
Quiz No. 13 (Problem Solving)

Course Outcome: Solve electrical circuit problems using relevant formula applying circuit analysis.

Learning Outcome: At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:

1. Analyze DC and AC circuit and network to solve electrical circuit problems by applying the
principles, laws and theorems in circuit analysis.

2. Compare the measured and solved values of electrical parameters to validate the principles,
laws, and theorems in circuit analysis.

Instruction: Read and answer each problem and scenario carefully. Show your solution.

1. A resistor is connected in parallel with 20 Ω inductive reactance. The combination is then

connected in series with 5 Ω capacitive reactance. Solve for the value at which the power factor
of the resultant impedance is unity.

2. A 100 V, 120 Hz generator and 80 V, 60 Hz generator are connected in series with a 60 V battery
and a coil. The resistance and inductance of the coil are 3 Ω and 2.65 mH, respectively.
Determine the RMS current of the coil.

3. A capacitor of 3.18 microfarads is connected in parallel with the resistance of 2,000 ohms. The
combination is further connected in series with an inductance of 795 mH and resistance of 100
ohms across a supply given by e = 400 sin wt + 80 sin(3wt + 60°). Assume w = 314 radins/sec.
Determine the total current.

4. Three impedance 𝑍𝑟 , 𝑍𝑠 and 𝑍𝑡 are connected in parallel. If at 60 Hz, 𝑍𝑟 = 0 + 𝑗8, 𝑍𝑠 = 0 −

𝑗12, and 𝑍𝑡 = 5 + 𝑗0 ohms. Solve for the frequency at resonance.

Determine the power dissipated.
