Upload 9.00 AM Date 08.00 AM

Instructions to the Students

1. The Final Assignment will be available in Moodle at 9:00 am on the date of examination.
2. This is an open resource examination; there are (03) pages. Students are allowed to refer any digital
materials (Internet, Proquest, Masader, and OER) with proper referencing and citation for each answers.
3. Students has to answer the questions typewritten in the word (.docx) format. Figures / Diagrams,
equations and solving of problems can be written by hand and added to the document as a
picture/image.
4. Save the assignment file using the student ID & Course code. [Example : 22s1234 – EEPW2251]
5. Students should submit the answers through the turnitin link provided in moodle page. If any problem
occurs, send it to the course tutor email. [ Email address : mohammad.farooq@nct.edu.om ]
6. Students are encouraged to upload the answers in the moodle at least two hours before the deadline to
avoid any technical issues.
7. In case of any technical problem in opening or submitting your assignment please contact your course
tutor through email and copy to the Department Head.
8. Any form of cheating is punishable. Students involved in cheating will be treated according to the
Plagiarism and Academic Integrity Policies.
9. Students are advised to write the answers in their own words. Based on the plagiarism policy and the
department approved similarity level, the marks will be deducted for the plagiarized [Copied] answers.
10. Students should complete their assignment within the given time. Assignments submitted after the
deadline will be marked 0.
Final Assignment

QUESTIONS [ ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS]

EACH QUESTION CARRIES 5 MARKS

1 Discuss the difference between balanced and unbalanced load in measuring three-phase power.
Draw the phasor diagram of a balanced delta connection load? Also, write the 3 phase power
equations.

2 Three identical coils, each of resistance 10 ohm and inductance 42mH are connected (a) in star and
(b) in delta to a 415V, 50 Hz, 3-phase supply. Determine the total power dissipated in each case.
3 a) In 3-phase power measurement by two wattmeter method, the phase angle and power factor of
the load will be when a) both the wattmeters had identical readings. b) one of the wattmeter reads
zero reading c) one of the wattmeter reads negative reading.

b) Two wattmeters connected to a 3-phase motor indicate the total power input to be 12kW. The
power factor is 0.6. Determine the readings of each wattmeter.
4 Why in an open circuit test the HV side is open and in short circuit test the LV side is shorted? What is
the purpose of conducting open circuit and short circuit test in a single phase transformer? Also discuss
in detail how you conduct the open circuit and short circuit test in a single phase transformer?
5 In a 66kV/11KV substation in Nizwa, it is often to measure high voltage and high current to ensure the
operation reliability by the maintenance Engineer and the report is to be submitted to Chief Engineer.
Choose a suitable transformer to measure the high voltage and high current and the explain its
operation with neat diagram.
6 a) A transformer has 500 turns of the primary winding and 10 turns of the secondary winding.
a) Determine the secondary voltage if the secondary circuit is open and the primary voltage is
120 V. b) Determine the current in the primary and secondary winding, given that the secondary
winding is connected to a resistance load 15 Ω?

b) The resistances and leakage reactances of a 30-kVA, 60-Hz, 2400-V:240-V distribution

transformer are R1 = 0.68 Ω , R2 = 0.0068 Ω , X1 = 7.8    Ω : X2 = 0.0780 Ω ,where subscript 1
denotes the 2400-V winding and subscript 2 denotes the 240-V winding. Each quantity is referred
to its own side of the transformer. Draw the equivalent circuit referred to the high Voltage side.
Also find the equivalent impedance and power factor.

7 What are the advantages of using a large number of poles in DC machine? Discuss the methods of
improving commutation?.

Final Assignment

8 Explain in detail the starter used in D.C Series motor.

9 A 4 pole wave wound 750 rpm dc shunt generator has an armature and field resistance of 0.4 W and
200 W respectively. The armature has 720 conductors and flux per pole is 2.895×10–2 weber. If the
load resistance is 10 W, determine the terminal voltage of generator.

10 Discuss the magnetization , Internal and External characteristics of various D.C generators
