INST RUCT IONS T O CANDIDAT ES :

1. Attempt any FIVE question(s), ea ch que stion c arrie s 12 marks.

1. A 10 KVA, 230/115 V, 50 Hz, single-phase transformer has the following parameters :

r1=0.8 Ω, r2=0.2 Ω, x1=3.2 Ω, x2=0.6 Ω

Calculate resistances and leakage reactances of :

a) Primary winding referred to secondary side

b) Secondary winding transferred to primary side.

2. Prove that the VA carried by open-delta bank without exceeding the ratings of the
transformer is 57.7% of the total 3-phase VA load. Also calculate the VA rating in open-
delta mode.

3. What is armature reaction in DC machines? Explain its effects. Hence derive the equations
for demagnetizing and cross-magnetizing ampere turns. Draw the relevant schematics for
all cases.

4. A 230 V DC shunt motor runs at 800 rpm with input current 21 A. Its armature and field
resistances are 0.1 ohms and 230 ohms respectively. Calculate the additional resistance to
be inserted in series with the armature to reduce the motor speed to 500 rpm at constant
load torque.

5. Derive the EMF equation of a DC machine. Also, define what is armature constant with its
significance.

6. A short shunt DC compound generator has shunt field, series field, and armature
resistances of 150 ohms, 0.2 ohms and 0.1 ohms respectively. The generator delivers 120 A
at a load of 220 V. Calculate the generated e.m.f. in the armature, take voltage drop per
brush equal to 1 V.

7. Derive an expression for the total flux per pole for a P pole machine. State the assumptions
made.

8. Explain how rotating magnetic field is produced when 3-phase balanced currents are fed to
3-phase balanced winding of an electrical machine. Use graphical method.
