EXPERIMENT# 09

Experiment Title: Butter analysis

Objectives: Find out the moisture contents in butter.

Apparatus required: petri-dish, oven, vacuum desicator, weighing balance.

Chemicals required: Butter sample

Procedure:

Take a clean petri dish and heat it in an oven at a temperature of about 95% to pretare .
Then cool it in by placing it in a desicator for 10 to 15 minutes to get a constant weight. Weight it by
placing it on a weighing balance.

Take 2-2.5 g of butter sample in a pretared petri and preweighed petri dish . place it in the oven at
temperature of 95 0 C and keep it in the oven till constant weight is achieved. Place it in the vacuum
desicator for 10 – 15 minutes. Weigh it and calculate the moisture contents as given below.

Observations and Calculations:

1. Weight of pre-tared petri dish = ____________________________

2. Weight of pre-tared petri dish and butter sample = ____________________________
3. Weight of butter = ____________________________
4. Weight of petri dish and butter sample (after heating )= ____________________________

Loss in weight = ________________________

%age of moisture = ___________________
