16. Some seeds are scattered by the wind. These seeds have parts that serve like wings,
parachutes, or balloons. The seeds of the narra, apitog , sunflower, cotton and talahib
are scattered by the wind. The dust like seeds of orchids are the smallest seeds.
Because of their smallness and lightness, the wind carries them to long distances.
17. These are plants that plant their own seeds. The peanut plants its own seeds. When
the peanut flowers fade, the pods push into the ground. These plants are self-planters.
The mangrove is also a self-planter. The seeds begin to grow into new plants while
still attached to the plant.
18. Some plants scatter their own seeds. The fruits of these plants crack or split and twist
when full dry. These seeds are then shot away from the parent plant, sometimes to
long distances. Some of these are the mongo, kamantigue, and the achuete.
19. Some seeds are unintentionally scattered by people and animals. These seeds are very
good hitchhikers. They have hooks and spines which make it impossible for them to
catch onto peoples clothing or the fur of animals. In this way, they get carried about.
Some of these hitchhiker’s are the amorseco, dalupang, and the makahiya.
20. These are seeds which are lighter than water so they can be carried to faraway places
by rivers, streams, or sea waves. Air chambers help keep some of these seeds afloat.
If these seeds take root in suitable places, they may develop into new plants. Thus
some seeds are scattered by water.
