Smart wheelchair is a voice controlled chair for disable persons. It consists of hardware and software
modules. The hardware module consists of a wheelchair structure, servo motors and microcontroller
(Arduino). The software module consists of programming in MATLAB software to process and recognize
the voice commands which are given through input device (microphone) to MATLAB. For a given input
voice commands, MATLAB process the input and recognize the command which is provide to
microcontroller that in turn control the servo motors attached to the wheels of the wheelchair.
The microphone is an input device. It is capable to take user’s voice commands. The input is in the form
of voice signals and transferred to the MATLAB, MATLAB process on given input voice signal by using
MFCC (mel frequency cepstral coefficients) and GMM (Gaussian Mixture Model) feature extraction for
command recognition. The Arduino then receives the input from MATLAB. It connected with motors to
drive the wheelchair anywhere. Motors are responsible for the movement of wheelchair. Hence, motors
receive input from the Arduino and depending upon the instruction type, motors moves accordingly. This
system uses two motors connected with motor driver. There are five different instructions that given to the
motors, they are forward, backward, stop, left, and right. The movement of wheelchair depends only upon
these five commands, The wheelchair responds to the voice command from its user to perform any
movement’s functions. The basic movement functions include forward and backward directions, left and
right turns and stop.

Physically disabled and elderly people in homes, hospitals, airports and old age homes can use the smart
wheel chair. It will facilitate them to move around independently in any direction without being pushed by
another individual.
It is certified that the FYP titled “Voice Controlled Wheel Chair” has been approved and is being
undertaken by the above-mentioned students as their Final Year Project.
It is undertaken that the undersigned has understood and accepted the “terms & conditions” of
the program, attached with this form and further reiterate that, if the subject FYP is approved, the
reimbursement of Funds claimed through Expenditure Report shall be in accordance with the
“terms & conditions” of the Program and the undersigned will be liable to return the unutilized
amount and other cost not approved by the Ignite-National Technology Fund, if any.
