LAWS OF EXPONENTS
1. Product of Powers (am) (an) = am+n (m2)(m3) = m2+3 = m5
2. Power of a Product (𝑎 ⋅ 𝑏)m = ambm (2x)2 = 22x2 = 4x2
3. Power of a Power (am)n = 𝑎𝑚⋅𝑛 (a3)2 = a3(2) = a6
4. Quotient of Powers am/an = am-n , an≠ 0 b6/b3 = b6-3 = b3
5. Power of a Quotient (a/b)m = am/bm , b≠ 0 (3/x)2 = 32/x2 = 9/x2
6. Zero Exponent Rule a0 = 1 , a≠ 0 (2x)0+5x0 = 1+5 = 6
7. Negative Exponent a-m = 1/am , am≠ 0 n-4 = 1/n4

MULTIPLICATION OF POLYNOMIALS
1. Monomial by a polynomial
-distribute the monomial to each of the terms in the polynomial using the laws of
exponents.
Ex: (2x)(3x2+2) = 6x3+4x
2. Product of Two Binomials
-use the FOIL Method
3. Cube of a Binomial
-use the rule: (a+b)3 = (a)3+3(a)2(b)+3(a)(b)2+(b)3

DIVISION OF A POLYNOMIAL BY A MONOMIAL

-To divide a polynomial by a monomial, apply the distributive property in division
where each term of the polynomial (dividend) is divided by the monomial (divisor).

DIVISION OF A POLYNOMIAL BY A BINOMIAL

-to find the quotient, you can use long division or synthetic division.

MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSIONS, EQUATIONS, AND INEQUALITIES

-A mathematical expression is a phrase that consists of variables or constants, or
combinations of numerical and literal coefficients.
-A mathematical equation expresses the equality of two mathematical expressions at
its right and left side. The expressions can be either numerical or algebraic expressions. It is a
statement that uses the equality symbol “=”.
-A mathematical inequality is a statement whose two sides are separated by either of
the symbols >,<, ≥, ≤, or ≠.

TRANSLATION OF ENGLISH TO MATHEMATICAL SENTENCES & VICE VERSA

-To translate verbal to mathematical sentences, and vice versa, use the mathematical
symbols and their meanings.
Ex: 2n-3 = 10 “The difference of twice n and three is ten.”

SOLUTION OF A LINEAR EQUATION IN ONE VARIABLE

-to find the solution of a linear equation in one variable, use the properties of equality:
Addition Property of Equality, Subtraction Property of Equality, Multiplication Property of
Equality, and Division Property of Equality.

SOLUTION SET OF A LINEAR INEQUALITY IN ONE VARIABLE

-The solution set of a linear inequality is the set of all numerical values that will make
the inequality true when substituted for the variable.
-Solution sets can be expresses either in set notation or interval notation.
Note: The direction of the inequality symbol will be reversed when multiplying/dividing a
negative number to both sides of the inequality.

LINEAR EQUATIONS & INEQUALITIES INVOLVING ABSOLUTE VALUES

Solutions of Equations Involving Absolute Values
-it is a numerical value that will make the equation true when substituted for the
variable. In |a|= b, there exist 2 solutions if b>0, 1 solution if b=0, and no solution if b<0.
Rule: |a|= b  a= -b or a= b
Ex: 1. |a|= 5 2. |n+3|= 5
a= -5 or a= 5 n+3 = 5 or n+3 = -5
n= 2 or n= -8
Solutions of Inequalities Involving Absolute Values
-it is the set of all numerical value that will make the inequality true when substituted
for the variable. Solution sets can be expressed either in set notation or interval notation.
Rules: i. |a|< b  -b < a < b iii. |a|> b  a < -b or a > b
ii. |a|≤ b  -b ≤ a ≤ b iv. |a|> b  a ≤ -b or a ≥ b
Ex: 1. |x|< 7
-7< x < 7 or (-7,7)

PROBLEM SOLVING INVOLVING LINEAR EQUATIONS & INEQUALITIES

Steps:
1. Read and analyze the problem carefully. If necessary, make illustrations
2. Use variable/s to represent the unknown or expressions for the unknown numbers in the
problem.
3. Determine the relationship of the unknown and some information in the problem.
4. Write accurately an equation or inequality to represent the relationship.
5. Find the unknown using algebraic procedures.
6. Determine how the final answer is related to the original problem.
