Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students love watching videos in schools as it gives them a little break from their regular
learning experience. Because of this, students are engaged with and focused on videos that are presented
during class. Movie creation tools allow students to build their very own videos to show to their classmates
which is both fun and exciting for many of the students.
Representation: Movie creation tools are wonderful for student who are shy, nonverbal, have auditory
processing disabilities, or just want a fun way to present a topic. Allowing students to create their own movies
helps them present their ideas in a unique way that doesn’t require them to stand in front of the class and
give a verbal explanation of a project.
Action and Expression: Creating a movie or video allows students multiple opportunities to express
themselves. They are able to decide what pictures, videos, and music they want to incorporate in their
project. Movie making is a wonderful way to allow students to express how they want to present a project.
Lesson idea implementation:
This lesson will begin with a flipped classroom assignment that asks students to watch the video I have
created on water pollution. The video highlights the excessive amount of plastic waste present in today’s
oceans and rivers. After watching the video students will be asked to create a list of other types of pollution
that they think are harming our water ways and bring this list to class. At the beginning of the classroom
lesson on water pollution students will raise their hands to tell the class one type of pollution that they
thought of. We will then dive into all the recognized types of water pollution such as nutrient pollution,
chemical pollution, oil spills, and groundwater pollution.

MultiMedia Tools
Students will be divided into groups and each group will have a different type of pollution. Over the course of
a week each group will research their type of pollution and ways to prevent it. Each group will then create a
three to five-minute movie based on their type of pollution that will contain title and reference pages,
pictures of clean and polluted water, a video example of their type of pollution, and music throughout the
whole video. Students must work together with their groups in order to create this movie. They can select
pictures from a file of previously chosen copyright compliant images available on the computers and the
video from Discovery Education.
After the completion of the movies we will have a video day where we watch all of the movies made by the
class. Student work will be assessed by whether or not they included all the required components as well as
each individual’s contribution to the group work. Videos may also be posted to the classroom blog with
parent permission in order to increase LoTi.
Importance of technology:
Using a multimedia authoring tool is essential to this project because it allows students to create their own
version of the video that introduced this topic. This project teaches students how to research a topic and put
all their ideas and information into one cohesive file. Being able to see their own video as well as the videos
their classmates have created will be exciting and beneficial for student engagement.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
Anytime students use the internet the teacher must be very mindful of their safety. Students will only be
allowed to research using approved websites or be using articles that the teacher has already read and picked
out for them. Prior to the lesson the teacher should create a file of images that are copyright compliant for
students to pick from. Parents will be kept informed about all aspects of the project and if any concerns arise
the teacher will address them to ensure that each student and parent is happy and safe. Any videos that are
posted to the classroom blog will be approved by the parents of the students that created it and the videos
will not contain the names of the students.
Reflective Practice:
I believe that the activities discussed in this lesson idea will be very beneficial for student learning. Students
will have the opportunity to practice researching a topic as well as be able to create their own video project.
This lesson can be expanded to other types of pollution, such as noise, air, or sound, or any other topic that
allows students to further their understanding of the world around them. Students could also utilize Audacity
to create voice over audio files that can be added to their final video products.
