my voice history

So I’ve loved to sing for as long as I can remember. I have memories of putting on performances
for my family with my Barbie karaoke machine when I was little and joining choir the first
chance I got. Speaking, however, was another story. I’ve always been extremely shy, never one
to raise my hand and speak, and I always hated giving presentations like these. I’m not sure
why, but I have always been extremely comfortable expressing myself through song, and not so
much through words. Fast forward to high school and being in choir and dance sort of segued
me into acting – something that, while terrifying, I learned to really love. Ever since I started
acting, though, I’ve struggled with confidence, energy, and volume. And still, to this day, the
difference in my voice when I am singing vs. when I am acting is ASTOUNDING.

Me when I’m singing: (shut up)

Me when I’m acting: (pitch perfect)

Maybe it’s just because I’ve had more experience singing, maybe it’s just because acting feels
closer to public speaking than belting out a song does, but my number one struggle with my
voice (and the note every director/teacher in my past has given to me) is that I am so loud and
confident during musical numbers and then, when performing dialogue, I lose energy, my lines
drop off at the end, and you can barely hear me.

So my NUMBER ONE GOAL in this class is to even out my playing field a bit when it comes to
these two things I love. I know I’m not bad at acting, I just need to learn the tips and tricks I
need to project and use my voice in a way that exudes confidence, even if I’m faking it a little.

This is where I wanna be by the end of this class: (some other video)
