Part 1: Rankine Cycle to Generate Electricity
a. Explain what happen to the working fluid as it moves along the cycle; describe the
temperature, pressure, and phase (s) of each of the stream corresponding to figure (b)
above.
Using stream as your working fluid and the following data: saturate vapor enters the
turbine at 8.0 MPa, saturated liquid exits the condenser at 0.008 MPa, and, the net
power generated by the cycle is 100 MW. Determine the following quantities
assuming ideal Rankine cycle:
3
b. Thermal efficiency
c. Mass flow rate of the stream in kg/h
d. The rate of heat transfer, qin, into the working fluid as it flows through the boiler, in
MW
e. The rate of heat transfer, qout, from the condensed steam as it flows through the
condenser, in MW
f. The mass flow rate of condenser cooling water, in kg/h, if the cooling water entering
the condenser at 15 oC and leaves the condenser at 35 c
g. Repeat part b. except that the cycleis no longer an ideal cycle. Use efficiency value
for turbines and pumps
h. What can one do to increase the efficiency of the rankine cycle? Explain.
Jawaban:
b. Asumsi
o Setiap siklus berlangsung pada steady state
4
State 2, 𝑝2 =0.008 MPa.
𝑠2 − 𝑠𝑓 5.7432 − 0.5926
𝑥2 = = = 0.6745
𝑠𝑔 − 𝑠𝑓 7.6361
Sehingga entalpinya
ℎ2 = ℎ𝑓 + 𝑋2 (ℎ𝑓𝑔 ) = 173.88 + (0.6745)2403.1 = 1794.8 𝑘𝐽/𝑘𝑔
State 3 adalah saturated liquid pada 0.008 MPa, jadi ℎ3 = 173.88 𝑘𝐽/𝑘𝑔
State 4, sama dengan tekanan 𝑝4 dan entropi spesifik 𝑠3 = 𝑠4 . ℎ4 dapat dicari dengan
menggunakan
𝑊̇𝑝
ℎ4 = ℎ3 + = ℎ3 + 𝑣3 (𝑝4 − 𝑝3 )

• Efesiensi termal
Diketahui
o ŋpump =0.75
o ŋturbine =0.75
o P3 =8.0 Mpa
o P1 =0.008 Mpa
o Wnet =100 MV
Asumsi;
ideal pada kedua unit tersebut. Dengan menggunakan steam table kita dapat mengisi;
𝑠4 − 𝑠𝑓
𝑋4𝑠 =
𝑠𝑔 − 𝑠𝑓
5.74 − 0.59
𝑋4𝑠 =
7.64
𝑋4𝑠 = 0.67
Sehingga,
ℎ4𝑠 = ℎ𝑓 + 𝑋4 (ℎ𝑓𝑔 )
ℎ4𝑠 = 173.88 + 0.67(2403.1)
ℎ4𝑠 = 1794.77 𝑘𝐽/𝑘𝑔
8
Kerja pada turbin
o Kondisi ideal
𝑊̇𝑡 = 𝑚̇(ℎ̇ 3 − ℎ4𝑠 )

𝑊̇𝑡 = 𝑚̇(2758.6 − 1794.77)

722.87 𝑘𝑗 = (ℎ3 − ℎ4 )
ℎ4 = (2578.6 − 722.87)kj/kg
ℎ4 = 2035.73 𝑘𝑗/𝑘𝑔
ℎ2𝑠 = ℎ1 + (𝑃3 − 𝑃1 )𝑉𝑠

𝑘𝑔 1𝑀𝑃𝑎 10 𝑁. 𝑚
ℎ2𝑠 = 181.91 𝑘𝐽/𝑘𝑔

𝑘𝐽
ℎ2 = 173.85 + 10.75 𝑘𝐽/𝑘𝑔

𝑘𝐽
ℎ2 = 184.6
𝑘𝑔
𝑊̇𝑐𝑦𝑐𝑙𝑒
ŋ𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙 =
𝑄̇𝑖𝑛
Dimana
𝑊̇𝑐𝑦𝑐𝑙𝑒 = 𝑊𝑡 − 𝑊̇𝑝 = 𝑚̇[(ℎ3 − ℎ4 ) − (ℎ2 − ℎ1 )]
Dan
𝑄̇𝑖𝑛 = 𝑚̇ 𝑥 (ℎ3 − ℎ2 )
Sehingga,
𝑚̇[(ℎ3 − ℎ4 ) − (ℎ2 − ℎ1 )]
ŋ𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙 =
𝑚̇ 𝑥 (ℎ3 − ℎ2 )
10
[(ℎ3 − ℎ4 ) − (ℎ2 − ℎ1 )]
ŋ𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙 =

ŋ𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙 =

ŋ𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙 = 0.28
• Mencari Mass Flow Rate

0 = 𝑄̇𝑐𝑣 + 𝑊̇𝑐𝑣 + 𝑚̇𝑐𝑤 (ℎ𝑐𝑤,𝑖𝑛 − ℎ𝑐𝑤,𝑜𝑢𝑡 ) + 𝑚(ℎ4 −

Part 2: Utilization of An LNG Revaporization Unit
After graduating with a degree in a chemical engineering you are working for PT Putra
Gasindo Gemilang (GPG) as a process engineer. PT GPG received a contract from an LNG
receiving terminal authority to evaluate the possibility of utilizing LNG cold energy for the
generation of electrical energy using the Rankine cycle. A short decription is given:
• LNG from LNG storage tank is pumped using LNG pump to pressure of 35-45 kgf/cm2
gauge.
• LNG flows through the first heat exchanger (propane vapor condenser) so that its
temperature is increased from -160 to -50 oC. Subsequently, LNG is evaporated in the
natural gas trim heater using sea water as the heating fluid.
• Once liquefied, propane as a working fluid in the Rankine cycle is pressurized by the
propane circulation pump and vaporized in the propane vaporizer at a pressure
corresponding to the temperature of the sea water. Propane vapor is expanded in the
turbine to produce electricity.
• Propane leaving the turbine enters the LNG vaporizer to liquefied again utilizing LNG
cold temperature.
Assignment:
1. Describe the Rankine cycle employed by Osaka Gas. Why is it called the low-temperature
Rankine cycle?
2. Estimate the conditions (temperature, pressure, phase) of the two fluids used in the low
temperature Rankine cycle.
Jawaban:
(sumber: https://www.osakagas.co.jp/en/rd/technical/1198907_6995.html)
Propana

(sumber: https://www.researchgate.net)
Boettner, D. and Bailey, M. (2011). Fundamentals of engineering thermodynamics.
listrik.
Hilda received an assignment from her thermodynamics course instructor who asked students
to derive the equation to calculate the efficiency of a Carnot engine:
𝑇
𝜂 = 1 - 𝑇𝐶
𝐻
Could you also do Hilda’s assignment? Hilda learned that the high temperature source could
be a combustion chamber where mixture of air and coal react and reach temperature of 700
K. What is the value of the Carnot engine efficiency calculated by Hilda? Explain why the
15
efficiency of the Carnot heat engine is higher than the typical efficiency value of an actual
heat angine (<0.4)?
Jawaban:
ln 𝑉𝑐 ln 𝑉𝑑
𝑄ℎ = R𝑇𝐻 dan 𝑄𝐶 = R𝑇𝐻
𝑉𝑏 𝑉𝑎
𝑇 𝐶𝑣 𝑑𝑇 𝑉𝑏 𝑇 𝐶𝑣 𝑑𝑇 𝑉𝑑

ln = ∫𝑇 𝐻 𝑑𝑇 atau ln = ∫𝑇 𝐶 𝑑𝑇

𝑉𝑏 𝑇𝐻 𝑉𝑑 𝑇𝐶
ln = ln atau ln = ln
𝑉𝑎 𝑇𝐶 𝑉𝑐 𝑇𝐻

ln = ln atau ln = ln
𝑉𝑏 𝑇𝐻 𝑉𝑐 𝑇𝐻

𝑇ℎ
𝑊 𝑇𝑐
𝜂= =1-
𝑄ℎ 𝑇ℎ
𝑇𝑐 298
𝜂=1- =1- = 0,582

The Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube is a device that receives a gas stream (say at 10 bar and 295
K) and divides it into two streams with equal mass flow rates and equal pressure of 1 bar.
There is no mechanical work and heat transfer involved in the operation of this device. Show
by using the first and the second law of thermodynamics, that maximum temperature
difference between the two outlet streams is 501K. Hint: Largest temperature difference can
be obtained only if gas expansion is a reversible process. Assume ideal gas behaviour and use

Asumsi Perhitungan:
Efisiensi = 0.9

21
Tabel 1. Steam Table
(Sumber: Moran, M., Moran, M., Shapiro, H., Boettner, D. and Bailey, M. (2011). Fundamentals of
engineering thermodynamics. NJ: John Wiley & Sons.)

280 − 240 𝑇 − 240
=
2992.7 − 2899.3 2913.56 − 2899.3
𝑇 = 246.1 𝑜 𝐶

Tabel 2. Steam Table
(Sumber: Moran, M., Moran, M., Shapiro, H., Boettner, D. and Bailey, M. (2011). Fundamentals of

ditentukan. Steam table digunakan untuk memperoleh data H1 dan H2S. Nilai H2
ditentukan menggunakan perhitungan efisiensi dengan persamaan

refrigerant R-134a is replaced with one of the three following hydrocarbons: ethane, propane,
and butane; which one will you choose as the working fluid to replace R-134a? Explain your
reasons from the thermodynamics point of view.

1. Have high latent heat of vaporization (can absorb big amount of heat)
2. Shouldn’t have high condensing pressure (economical reason, increase wear and tear
of device)
3. Freezing temperature of refrigerant should be below evaporation temperature => solid
states made system unable to function as a cycle
4. It should have sufficient high critical temperature => that won’t be reached during
refrigeration cycle
5. Refrigerant should be non-toxic, non-corrosive, and chemically stable
6. It should be easy to detect leaks
7. Cost of refrigerant should be low
