This is a double page spread from the popular

magazine, NME. They are known for being an

informal magazine that focuses around trends,
celebrity affairs and gossip. Their audience
ranges from thirteen to twenty, and the majority
are young. They mainly feature celebrities that
have a large platform and are the focus of the
general media.
In this spread the focus is Nicki Minaj. She is
considered as an icon to the youth and has a
large audience that are majority of the young.
They show her, wearing a ring that titles her as
an ‘icon,’ which is what many call her.
NME shows how powerful she is by having her
body take up half of the double spread.

The main focus of this spread is Nicki herself. They have her name titled in a bold purple under toned barbie pink,
that compliments, but also contrasts with the light washed baby pink background color. Nicki has associated herself
with pink, her music videos always show her in rooms that are bright neon pinks, and has told her audience
numerous times that ‘pink’ is her ‘favorite.” She is a huge fan of the barbie dolls, and she has a barbie that models
after herself and is sold, called the ‘Barbie Nicki.” She also has named her albums, “pinkprint,” “Pink Friday” and
“barbie world.” The magazine choose this color because they know her audience share a love of pink, and are used
to seeing her embracing her feminine side by publicly showing her love of the color pink, especially a bond barbie
pink.
Nickis name is half covered by her arm, and this wasn't fixed as even though it is covered people know who she is.
She is a very successful rapper and singer and producer and is a worldwide phenomena, her audience being global.
The majority of people know who she is just by her being called her face name, “Nicki.” The magazine know they do
not need to clarify who she is as she has a high global status.
This spread showcases her in both of her albums aesthetic. Her first few albums have had pink aesthetics and
themes, however her recent album “Queen,” theme and aesthetic shifted as she was inspired by African culture,
especially African mythology. They show both the themes, having her behind a pink backdrop, and wearing barbie
pink lipstick, and having her name written in pink, but she is wearing a zebra print body suit and wearing exotic
African themed jewelry. The effect of this is to create a theme which is vibrant and loud—a theme which you might
associate Nicki Minaj with.
The text is written in columns, arranged neatly around her figure. It is written in bold black to compliment the black
text above her name and the black blue toned wig she wears, along with the black stripes of her clothing. The color
scheme goes along with Nicki’s aesthetic and reputation. She is known for being edgy and bold, yet maintains her
feminine and girly side. Black and pink and perfect examples of both those characteristics and were chosen to go
along with her. Some part of the text are highlighted in a brighter shade of barbie pink, to attract views to that area
of the text. The highlighted words are directly from Nicki, and talk about the shift in her music's content. She
quotes about how she ‘toned’ down the explicit ‘sexual’ content of her lyrics. The words are emphasized by off-
center boxes around small phrases. Again, this adds to the feeling that the artist, and the magazine, is quirky and
different—maybe a bit mad. This would be appealing to the audience as it is mainly for people, generally an older
audience based on the size of the text, who are looking for new music.
