1.BUSINESS DESCRIPTION
1.1 Need:Why Start a T-Shirt Business?
Starting a T – shirt design and sales business is of course one of the many businesses that can be
started in any part of the world and the owner of the business can still penetrate the world market once
the design is good and it meets a need in the fashion market; everybody whether old or young have
need for clothes most especially T – shirts for casual wears.
Entrepreneurs who intend starting a clothing line business can start their own T – shirt design
and sale business from their home on a small scale and service a customized market or big time
investors can open a clothing factory and dominant both the U.S. market and the international market.
The bottom line is always that there is always a ready market for manufacturers of clothes. All a
designer need to do is to ensure that he or she carves a niche for his business and they work hard to
build their brand name to be accepted beyond his / her city of operations.
T – Shirt design and sales business just like most businesses, thrives on creativity, branding
(media hype and what have you) and good business skills. Any aspiring entrepreneur can start a T – shirt
design and sales business, as long as they are creative, they can get people to promote their brand and
they have good business skills.

1.2Goals

It has always been my goal to start a profitable business that also has socially conscious values.
As a student in an Entrepreneurship class, I set a goal to have my first business up and running by the
age of 24. I am currently 21 years old. My goal for sales growth is at least 20% for the first five years. My
third goal is to open the new store in year three.

1.5 Business Overview
The fashion industry is indeed a highly thriving industry all over the globe for obvious reasons
and T – shirt design and sales is a subset of the industry. There are various clothing label; some are
national brand and some others are international brands.
The fashion industry, especially cloth / T – shirt making business was not as easy as it is now; before
now, clothing was handmade based on demand by individual. In the 20th century after the invention of
sewing machines (industrial sewing machines) it became pretty much easier to produce T – shirts en
mass.
Technology indeed is responsible for opening up the clothing industry. T – Shirts can now go
through factory system of production and still maintain good quality and standard sizes. With that, it is
easier for retailers to order and sell T – shirts at fix prices in department stores and boutique et al
without stress.
The fashion industry is a creation of the modern age and fashion style changes with rapid
astonishment and in most cases people go back to the past to re – introduce old fashion. The fashion
industry is indeed a rapidly changing industry; fashion trend will always come and go at different season.
The bottom line is that successful clothing labels (T – shirt designers) have a thorough grasp of
the market and they know how to meet their needs or cajole them to accept what they have to offer;
they are always creative, flexible and ready to either detect the trend or move with the trend.
No doubt, a retailer or wholesale distributor of T – shirts can order for various sizes of clothes from
anywhere in the world and sell in his or her country without even visiting the production factory. As a
matter of fact, any clothing line based business is one business that has the capacity to survive
regardless of what is happening in the economy of the world.
Economic downturn or even a galloping inflation does not in any way affect the sale of clothes;
people can’t do without wearing clothes. For instance, you can’t find even the homeless people in
America not wearing clothes
From time immemorial, the fashion industry is known to be one of the largest employers of
labor (both directly and indirectly) in the United States of America. Some of the leading labels in the
fashion industry are from the United States of America. Although, some clothing labels outsource the
production of their clothes to other parts of the world; predominantly Asian countries, just in a bid to
cut cost.
Some cities of the world are considered to be fashion hubs; they dictate what happens in the
fashion industry. The cities are Paris, Milan, New York City, Tokyo and London. These cities are known to
host fashion exhibitions; designers who want to play at the global stage ensures that they exhibit their
clothing collections to fashion enthusiast during fashion week in any of the cities mentioned above.
As a T – shirt designer, once your brand / label is accepted in any of the fashion capitals of
the world, it won’t be too long before you become a globally recognized clothing label – brand.

3
1.6 Products or Services
currently offers only high-quality, 100% cotton short- and long-sleeve T-shirts with a retro look
on our website. Customers choose the iron-ons they want, shirt colors, quantity, and sizes. The shirts are
created on demand and shipped within 48 hours. The product appeals to people comfortable buying
through the Internet and who want to customize their clothing with unique retro designs.
After start-up funding is secured, we will expand the types of clothing items available and the
customization options. Additional items to the product line will include fashion T-shirts, and baseball-
style T-shirts. T-shirts made from recycled water bottles and clothing for our eco-conscious customers
will also be available. We plan to add a new athletic product line of high-quality sweatshirts, sweatpants,
and athletic shorts with a retro look.
In addition, we plan to purchase professional-grade screen-printing and embroidery equipment.
This will allow us to increase customer choices for personalization. After the graphic designer is hired,
we will have over 50 proprietary designs available exclusively . The graphic designer will also assemble
hundreds of existing retro graphic elements for customers to create their own unique designs for free
online and in the store when it opens.

4
1.7 Business Location
The primary way customers currently find is through our website at www.Humourinindia.com.
All the production is done in my home. I now use commercial pressing equipment, given to me by my
uncle when he closed his tailoring business, for the T-shirt iron-ons. To expand the business, I am
researching the purchase of low-cost commercial silk-screening and embroidery equipment for
garments. This is a good time to buy this equipment because the inventory is high and vendors are
cutting prices to move their products quickly. The vendors also supply free training for all the
equipment. I plan to spend Rs25,000 for a commercial-grade screen printing equipment package, a
digital garment printer, and one embroidery machine. This new equipment will initially fit in my
basement for production.
The interior will reflect with posters, art. The space will have room for a dedicated private
production area in the back and increased inventory storage. The new Broad Ripple storefront will also
give physical image and a place to hold Advisory Council meetings and social events.

2.Market Evaluation
2.1 Industry Conditions
Most major multi-store retail chains had sales declines in the first part of 20xx. However, they
saw improvements toward the end of that year, and the upward trend has continued into this year. The
retail industry continues to show weak, yet positive, signs of growth. According to Internet Retailer, e-
commerce retail sales were up by 15% over the previous year. In fact, any growth in the retail industry is
attributed to online sales increases. Analysts at eMarketer forecast continued growth in Indian
e-commerce sales of between 13% and 18% yearly, much of it spurred by social media.

2.2 Market Trends

In recent time, the fashion industry relies more on mass market sales for them to make the kind
of income that will sustain the business. The mass market takes care of a wide range of customers that
cuts across both the rich and the poor. Most of the new clothing lines that are trying to catch – up with
the market often produce ready-to-wear clothes using trends set by leading fashion labels.

What they do is that, they try to see the direction of the trend as established by renowned
fashion brand before producing their own versions of the original look by making use of cheaper fabrics
and simpler production processes which can easily be done by machines. They can comfortably sell such
product at a cheaper price to the masses who can’t afford to by the original which is often way too
expensive for the common man.

T – Shirt designers and fashion designers now leverage on the runway – fashion expo to
promote and attract market for their products. Any fashion designer who is recognized in Paris, Milan,
New York City, or London can comfortably become a global recognized fashion label.

Small start – up T – shirt designs and sales companies leverage on small markets such as
companies, churches, schools, organized groups and sport fans to sell their T – shirts. This group of
people can order large numbers of customized T – shirts for special purposes. For example, a political
party enters into a business deal with a T – shirt design and sales company to help them produce shirts
to be used by their supporters during political rallies and campaigns.

6
2.3 Target Market
No doubt the clothing line industry has the widest range of customers; everybody on planet
earth wears clothes howbeit different designs, quality and style.
In view of that, we have created strategies that will enable us reach out to people that cut
across different classes in the society; we will produce T – shirts and casual clothes for male, female,
young adults and children. We have conducted our market research and survey and we will ensure that
our T – shirt label is well accepted in the market place.
These are the different group of people that we will be producing T – shirts and casual clothes
for;
Male
Female
Young Adult
Children
Corporate Executives
Unions
Sports Men and Women (sport clubs)
Students
Churches (Customized church robes)
Political Parties

7
2.4Competition
Our competitive advantage as a T – shirt design and sales company is the fact that we are going
to produce T – shirts and casual clothes for a wide range of people; we will produce for both the rich and
the poor.
Another competitive advantage for shirts Design and Sales Company is the quality and robust wealth
of experience of our management team. The management team comprises of professionals who have
worked with some of the leading international brand in the fashion industry.
Our latest machines and equipment also count towards our advantage especially when it
comes to competing with other T – shirt designs and sales companies within the same category that we
operate. The quality of every T – shirts and casual clothes that comes out of our production line must be
certified okay before they are released to the market. T-Shirt Design & Sales Business Plan – SALES AND
MARKETING STRATEGY
Owing to the fact that we are a new T – shirts design and sales company that want to take
on the international market, we have decided to model some of the leading international clothing
manufacturing brand. We will ensure that we interact with our target market (customers) and sample
their opinions to know what they want before mass – producing T – shirts and casual clothes. It is easier
to penetrate the market when what you produce is exactly what the people wanted.
The fashion industry is indeed a very competitive industry, every T – shirt designer and clothing line
must ensure that they are always on their toe and in touch with the trend if indeed they want to
continue to be in business. We are aware of this fact which is why we hired business consultant with
bias in marketing and sales to help us craft a winning marketing and sales strategy.
In summary, Richards Pearls™ T – Shirts Design and Sales Company will adopt the following sales
and marketing approach to promote and sell our T – shirts and casual clothes introduce our T – shirt
label by sending introductory letters to churches, schools, corporate organizations, political parties,
groups, and other establishment that wears T – shirts and casual clothes.
Beyond every reasonable doubt the media plays a very big role when it comes to helping a
clothing label gain international significance. The social media also plays an important role in modern
day fashion publicity and advertisement; it gives fashion label the ability to reach out to a wide range of
customers all over the world within a short period of time and of course at a very cheaper price when
compared to other publicity and advertising platforms.
Any T – shirt Design and Sales Company that wants to take on the market must be deliberate
when it comes to building brand awareness and credibility. Most often than not, big – time clothing
labels ensures that they create great hype whenever they are about to release any unique design from
their stable.
Social media, such as blogs, micro blogs, podcasts, photo and video sharing sites are some of
the tools fashion designers leverage on to promote their labels. Some of the preferred social media
platforms that are used in the fashion industry are Instagram, Tumblr, WordPress, Facebook, twitter,
YouTube and other sharing sites. Here are the platforms we intend leveraging on to promote and
advertise Richards Pearls™ T – Shirt Design and Sales Company;

8
High Perceived Value: The product must convincingly offer a high level of value
and durability for the price, and give consumers confidence that their money is
well and wisely spent.

Quality and Utility As Well As Fashion: Fashion remains important, but quality
comes first in the minds of many consumers. Products that offer quality, utility,
AND fashion have a tremendous competitive advantage over products that
offer fashion alone.

High Brand Reputation Above Style: The brand must stand for a company that
clearly puts customer satisfaction and value above all else. If the brand also
stands for a firm with great styling, high social values, such as eco-
consciousness, or other ancillary attributes, that is even better.

Cheap Chic Still Has a Place: If a company wants to win the hearts of fashion-
conscious, budget-conscious consumers, it must provide unique styles at
affordable prices.

3.OPERATIONS

3.1 Market Analysis Summary

Your T-Shirt! has segmented the market into two groups, organized by the type of product that
they purchase. The first group is customers that desire an already created graphic image to be placed on
the their shirt. The second group are those that prefer custom artwork to be placed on their shirt. Your
T-Shirt! has decided to divide the market by the products that they purchase because it offers an
intuitive, easy method of targeting the two different groups. An additional reason for segmenting the
market based on the two products is because the demographics for the buyers of the two products are
distinct enough to group them separately.

3.2 Market Segmentation

Your T-Shirt! has segmented their market into two distinct groups. As mentioned previously, the
two segments are grouped by the type of product they chose. Although Your T-Shirt! is dividing the
market by product type, it is effectively dividing the market by age as well since the customers who
purchase the custom artwork shirts tend to be older than the group preferring the ready-made graphics.
While this is not a hard and fast rule, it is a fairly accurate generalization.

Graphics -- This is group purchases a shirt and has an existing graphic placed on the shirt. This is
the less expensive option and lends itself to low production numbers, as low as one, since there is not
the inherent expense of artwork creation.
Ages 14-25
69% are students

Artwork -- This segment prefers having custom artwork created and placed on their shirt. They
generally have the image or style in mind and will direct the artist to create it. Occassionally when the
customer will not have an exact image in mind but will rely on the artist's skills to help shape the work.
Some of these customers will use Your T-Shirt!'s partner artist, others will have a friend or other service
provider develop the art.
Ages 24-43
18% are using the shirt as a form of communication for a cause or a message

10
11
3.3 Strategy and Implementation Summary
Your T-Shirt! will leverage their two competitive edges to quickly gain market share. The
competitive edges are an unprecedented catalog of graphic images and the quality of their computer
generated sublimations, a function of using prototype HP sublimation technology. The marketing
campaign will emphasize the ability to completely customize a shirt. Youth events and student groups
will be targeted. The sales campaign will emphasize making the experience as easy and pleasing as
possible to encourage repeat customers and word of mouth referrals.

3.4 Competitive Edge

Your T-Shirt! has two competitive edges that they will use to their advantage to achieve market
penetration.

1.Large catalog of graphics -- Your T-Shirt! is developing several strategic relationships with
existing graphics companies that have an extensive images catalogs. It would be difficult and expensive
for Your T-Shirt! to create their own library of graphics but by developing relationships with companies
who own existing libraries, Your T-Shirt! is able to offer its customers an expansive array of imagery.
Your T-Shirt! pays a royalty for use of these graphics.
2.Quality of the sublimation -- Due to its networking contacts at Hewlett-Packard, and the use
of prototype technology, Your T-Shirt! will be able to produce sublimations of much higher quality than
any of their competitors. This gives Your T-Shirt! a fantastic competitive edge. At some point within the
next two years this technology may be available to the public, however because of the close contacts
Mr. Inkler shares with HP, Your T-Shirt! will always have cutting edge technology available, well in
advance of any public release.

12
3.5 Sales Strategy
The sales strategy will emphasize the fact that ordering a shirt from Your T-Shirt! is a very easy
and pleasing experience. The sales effort will work on the continual development of the website, the
main tool used for ordering. It will be quite important to have a friendly, easy to use web interface for
two main reasons. One, there are so many choices available that it could become daunting to the
customer. The second reason is that a large portion of sales will be placed on the website. It is
imperative to make it so easy that people don't stop part way through ordering due to cumbersome or
difficult instructions. The website embraces the philosophy of making the experience so easy and
pleasing that the customer comes back to buy more.

Your T-Shirt! will also rely on three other factors to help boost sales. The first is exemplary
customer service. Having excellent service will provide the customer with the feeling that the business is
looking out for the customer's interest. Second, when a customer places an order, they will probably be
excited to see the finished product, so Your T-Shirt! will ensure the fastest turnaround time possible.
Lastly, sales will be boosted by offering customers a high quality product. We will use high grade cotton
shirts and state-of-the-art sublimation printing materials.

3.6 Sales Forecast

The sales forecast is reasonably conservative so that goals will be achievable. Sales will be slow
initially, a function of the fact that Your T-Shirt! is a start up organization and it will take time to build a
sufficient foundation. The following table and chart show sales forecasts by both month and year.
The sales forecast is broken down by product, graphics or artwork. "Graphics" indicates the
customer will be using a pre-existing graphic, either one that they are bringing in or one that they are
purchasing a license to use from Your T-Shirt! "Artwork" denotes that the customer is using a graphic
that is being created specifically for them. All customers will purchase their shirt from Your T-Shirt

13
14
3.7 Marketing Strategy
The marketing campaign will seek to increase visibility for Your T-Shirt!, emphasizing the ability
of the customer to completely customize their design. Your T-Shirt! will use several different venues to
communicate this message.

1.Advertising -- Your T-Shirt! will run ads in several teen/young adult magazines whose
readership demographics are similar to Your T-Shirt's.
2.Youth events -- Many different events will be sponsored as a means of increasing visibility.
These include but are not limited to music festivals and sporting events along with the new genre of
extreme sporting events.
3.Student groups -- Your T-Shirt! will attempt to gain awareness of the different student groups
who actively purchase shirts for their members. Awareness will be achieved through a combination of
sponsorship of student organization events as well as advertisements in magazines that specifically
target this demographic.

15
3.8 Management Team

I anticipate hiring my next key employee in year two at the latest. He or she will have a degree
in Graphic Design or the equivalent of that in graphic design work experience. This person will serve as
the company’s graphic designer and production assistant. The graphic designer will create our own
unique, proprietary retro designs. The designer will also help expand the business into also offering
customer-created retro designs through our website. The graphic designer will work closely with me and
the Advisory Council members to determine the best designs to appeal to our target markets. After year
three, I will hire more production and sales staff as needed.

3.9 Management Team Gaps

We currently lack a full-time professional who can deal with the changing legal and financial
aspects of international business. We have relied on legal consultants but are now analyzing the
possibility of adding an additional position to deal exclusively with international issues. In addition, as
we continue to grow and hire more personnel, we may hire a controller.

3.10 Human Resources

As the sole proprietor, I will manage all human resources functions. My first contract employees
will be five rotating part-time apparel agents who will work on a commission basis to wear and promote
branded clothing. They will talk up our products and hand out discount coupons at area major events to
promote business and increase sales. They will earn 12% of any sales generated—their coupons will
have discount codes tied directly to them for tracking purposes. Commission checks will be cut on a
monthly basis. Each agent will also receive a free T-shirt and (when available) a sweatshirt and athletic
shorts. I will use a temporary staffing agency to find young people willing to do this work on an as-
needed basis. My CPA will help me manage payroll, taxes, and all necessary government reporting.
I anticipate hiring my first full-time employee in year two at the latest. This employee will serve
as the company’s graphic designer and production assistant. He or she will have a degree in Graphic
Design or the equivalent of that in graphic design work experience. The graphic designer will create our
own unique, proprietary retro designs. He or she will also assemble several hundred digital retro graphic
elements for customers to choose from when creating their own designs on our website. This person
will also help with producing the products to fulfill orders. I will post an adds will also use my
networking connections to find the best person to fill the position. This position will be considered
contract and not eligible for benefits until it becomes a full-time position. However, the standard three-
week paid time off will be given. A yearly merit raise and possible bonus, depending on performance
and sales, will be available.

16
3.11 Risk Management Evaluation
Avoiding, reducing, and transferring risk is important to the success of the business and the
basis of our risk management plan. We will not be assuming any risk directly. There are several laws that
apply, for which I already comply—or plan to comply with when employees are hired. These include the
following.
 Online security laws: all customer information is fully protected by our secure shopping
cart for purchases. No information will be gathered from children under the age of 13.
 Labor relations laws, compensation and equal opportunity employment laws: we will
follow all laws when hiring contract and full-time employees.
 Consumer protection and environmental safety laws: we Will offers no products that
will in any way harm consumers or create a harmful environment.
We are dedicated to the protection of our intellectual property. When we creates our own
proprietary designs, we will register the artwork with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to protect
the designs from unauthorized use. Our logo is also trademarked for protection.
Insurance is necessary to protect the business from unforeseen events that could cost the
business money. The following insurances will be purchased upon receipt of funding:
 commercial general liability insurance to protect the business against lawsuits due to
tort allegations and unforeseen property damage;
 auto insurance to cover any accidents while conducting business; and
 life insurance to cover any expenses incurred by the business in the event of the death
of the owner.
I currently provide my own personal medical insurance, but as the business grows and
additional employees and equipment are added, it will be necessary to add:
