Who Speaks for the Trees?

Lesson:
1. Talk about the Lorax poster
a. At the STEAM expo we want to focus on the environmental issues addressed
within the children's book, the Lorax. Originally we wanted to read the story,
but given the limited time we thought it would be a better idea to have an
engaging poster board retelling the important events and briefly go over the
topics we wanted to discuss from the book.
2. Ask students to list what they think the major ideas are of the story
a. We want to have students engage with the material, so we would like to lead this
activity in a discussion based manner. This small activity of having the students
provide us with their answers on what they think the book is about will be a
great way to lead into more in-depth questions about the theme we want to
cover inside the book.
3. Have them answer the following questions:
a. Why do you think the once-ler did what he did?
b. What patterns of change in the environment did we observe?
c. What were the environmental conditions like before the company started
making the “thneeds”? What were they like afterward?
d. What was the author's message concerning what one person can do to save or
destroy the environment?
