What Is Practice Teaching?

For me, practice teaching is a course that enables the student-teachers to

experience the actual teaching-learning process in the actual school

environment. It is a training ground for teachers to be wherein they apply all their

learnings since their first year in college and up to the 1 st semester of the fourth

year. They put into practice what they have learned in their Field Study subjects.

Practice teaching also gives opportunities to student-teachers to experience

handling of pupils and knowing the individual differences of learners. It is wherein

they analyze what strategy and methods to use for the pupils. The cooperating

teacher serves as the guide of the student-teacher.as time goes by.

Practice teaching prepares the student-teachers for their profession and

5to let them experience the challenges of the teaching profession and to cope

with it in the real learning environment.

Practice teaching serves as an eye opener for student-teachers and let

them be prepared for their future as real teachers/professional teachers.

A. WORKING WITH THE PUPILS

This was the very challenging part of my practice teaching because

dealing with the pupils was an uneasy task. As we all know, children have

individual differences and are keen observant, and I studied first their behaviors

before coming up to appropriate methods and strategies.

At first, it was a difficult task for me to discipline and to catch their

attention. I was so upset with their behaviors and I wanted to give up. But as time

went by, I had learned to understand and know them better. I instilled to their

minds to respect me by being a role model to them. I also set some rules and

limit myself not to be so close to them. In terms of cleaning the room, I

supervised them and I observed that they were industrious. I learned to be firm

on the words that came out to my mouth and I set myself not to be so strict to

them. Being too strict sometimes gives idea to the pupils to be afraid of you and

this can create a gap between you and the pupils. I also gave positive

reinforcement to the pupils who were doing great in the class in form of praise.

Though I felt sad parting with them and so did they, I appreciated that they had

accepted me as their student-teacher and I would never forget the bonding we

had shared. They had learned from me and I also learned from them. Above all, I

learned to love my pupils and so did they.

I realized that being patient is a very vital part as a teacher in dealing with

the pupils. I also learned to love teaching as a profession and a mission. Lastly,

loving the pupils makes them love you in return.

B. WORKING WITH THE TEACHERS

It wasn’t really difficult to work with the teachers because they were very

approachable and they were so eager to help and guide us during our internship.

As what Ma’am Obedoza had said at the orientation, as student-teachers, we

always bear in our minds that we must be “teachable”.

At first, I thought that my cooperating teachers were very strict and

snobbish. But as time went by, I realized that they were so approachable and

were easy to get along with. They taught me so many things about teaching and

also shared their teaching experiences so that I could learn from it. They gave

me some advices not just as my mentors but also as mothers. I did not complain

with the difficult tasks they asked me to do because I always put in my mind the

words of Ma’am Obedoza. They were very understanding and they told me not to

be shy to ask them what I wanted to know and what my requirements were as an

intern. They also told me that as a teacher, I should always lengthen my

patience.

I learned lots of things from my cooperating teachers. I thanked them so

much because with their steadfast support and guidance, I had learned to love

and enjoy my internship period in Binalbagan Elementary School.

C. WORKING WITH THE SCHOOL PERSONNEL

The school personnel of Binalbagan Elementary School were so

approachable and they gave us a warm welcome during our internship. I greeted

them as a sign of respect and they were not snobbish like what I was expecting.

During the activities and programs in school, they extend their help to us and I

never heard a single complain whenever we need them. They worked

harmoniously with us and I could sense that my first impression about them were

wrong. Without their support and trust with us during the programs we organized,

it would never be a successful one.

D. WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITY

Binalbagan Elementary School was a big school. But I found it easy to

have it as a cooperating school because it is near to my house. I was

comfortable working with this school because I used to study here when I was

young and I knew some of the teachers working here. Even though it was a

public school, for me it seemed to be semi-private because the utilities, materials

and buildings had improved. When the earthquake strike negros, I was

devastated and frightened about what might had happened because the school

was old and there were many rooms that needed repair. Thanked goodness that

the earthquake had passed. The parents were also supportive of their children

and contributed much of their effort for the welfare of the school.
E. DEMONSTRATION TEACHING

Before my demonstration, I see to it that all my materials were well

prepared and complete. I also practiced beforehand so that I could master my

lesson plan and have the confidence in front of the pupils. During my

demonstration, I was nervous but I managed to have the confidence facing the

pupils because I was well prepared. It was a challenge for me because honestly,

I don’t like Filipino subject. But still I thank God that Filipino was the subject area

of my two demonstrations because pronunciation was not been given emphasis

unlike the English subject.

As I discussed the lesson, I made sure that I had my pupils’ attention and I

explained the lesson very well. I also asked the pupils for any question or

clarification regarding the lesson. I had been able to control the noise during the

group activity and I was glad that my strategy worked. At the end of my

demonstration, I was happy that many of the pupils got high scores. It was a

reflection of the success of my demonstration and I thanked the pupils for their

cooperation.

My cooperating teacher gave only few comments about my demonstration

and I was very happy to receive my evaluation sheet.

F. ACTUAL CLASSROOM TEACHING

It was not an easy task to handle a class and I always catch the attention

of the pupils in order for learning to become more effective. It wasn’t easy when it

comes to disciplining the pupils, so I studied their behavior and then came up to

different methods and strategies. I had learned that teaching is not just about

teaching the pupils but on the other hand, learning also from them. I had also

learned that a teacher should not be too strict in disciplining the children because

it might just worsen their behavior.
