Dear ETABS users, this is coolest bliss and in this tutorial we will solve an example by UBC method and
then we’ll compare it with ETABS. Remember, it is a very simple example, just to clear the concepts of
ETABS new users.
In the following pages, you will see some pictures and notes.
*2D model in XZ
*24ft wide bay
*12ft high four storeys
*Start a new model.
*Units kip-ft
*4 Storeys
*Each storey 12ft high
*Grid Only

4-Select to ALL
draw 3-Draw beam from STORIES
column grid B to grid C as
option shown
1-Select

Select

and
delete.
Goto this
option
Make self weight multiplier "ZERO" to
neglect self weights.
Select MASS SOURCE
OPTION
1-Select "FROM LOADS" because we will not
put any additional mass in this example and
no self weight...We will only put DL and LL so
select this option.
"4 LINES
SELECTED"
we will
put UDL
Put 2 kip/ft as DL towards
GRAVITY. Other values should
be as shown.
GET PREVIOUS Dead Load =
SELECTION 2kip/ft
Keep all other
options same as
that of DL in
previous step and
put 1 kip/ft as LIVE
LOAD
Goto DEFINE>STATIC LOAD CASES
and define two new cases as
1-EQX as QUAKE according to UBC 97
and
2-EQY as QUAKE according to UBC 97
For EQX put all
values as shown in
form
Similarly for EQY...everything same,
except the direction....
(YOU CAN EVEN OMIT THIS EQY
LOAD CASE because we will run
our model as 2D only in XZ
direction.
1-UNITS
should
be Kip-ft

Before going to next step. Fill all the data
in this sheet
Note

Note
these
two

Check DL and LL
is same as you
put in excel
sheet.
Forget
about TOP

On the bottom
location..

they are
(Storey-1, see
same in this
DL=192 and
example
LL=96) same
as in excel
sheet.
Compare!
Check story shear this time
Show reactions

EXCEL SHEET
Value of DELTA S.
you have to put this Story drift ratio = Story
value in excel sheet drift / Story Height
