‘Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of being your own boss.

One of the most important achievements in life for people who belong to the working class is to cast

aside their boss. How many times have you heard this idea when talking with workers? It is in fact, one of the

most commented situations in daily work. In recent years, the number of people choosing to start their own

business has risen significantly. Moreover, many of them claim that one of the most important reasons for this

occurrence is the misery of working for someone else. However, these people take risks because at the moment

of becoming their own boss, they still do not know what this adventure may result in. It is evident then, that

being your own boss may bring about advantages as well as disadvantages.

On the side of disadvantages, long hours and economic responsibility are the main disadvantages of

being your own boss. Self- employed people have to be prepared to work long hours because it is the only way

to succeed when a business is recently set up. Most of the times and, especially when a business has just been

set up, owners have to work even at the weekend to get economic support for their companies. Another

disadvantage is economic responsibility. If workers have recently become their own boss, they must know that

their responsibility as owners is greater than when being an employee. What is more, in the case those new

owners hire employees; they take the burden of paying salaries and health care services, which can put their

new business in huge risk.

On the other hand, flexible working hours and a greater sense of satisfaction stand out to be the most

notorious advantages of being your own boss. One of the most interesting types of control that entrepreneurs

have is the ability to choose when they want to work. In that way, self-employed people can make decisions on

their own. This can give them a great sense of freedom and allows them to do exactly what they want without

interference from anyone else. Another advantage that self-employed people have is a greater sense of

satisfaction. When those who work for their own consistently perform well as self-employed business owners,

their entire company reaps the benefits. Consequently, their income gradually increases, and as a result they

feel a much greater sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.

All things considered, being your own boss may result in a rewarding or a disappointing experience

depending on the amount of time and sacrifice devoted to this commercial activity. Despite the fact that there

are people who prefer working for others, I am of the opinion that self-employment can be a gratifying

experience, which may turn people belonging to the working class into successful businessmen or women and

thus, achieving social mobility.
