The advanteges and disadvanteges

of being your own boss

Essay by Madalina Ion

Becoming your own boss requires a lot of planning, a bit of risk-taking, and a
great deal of commitment to your goals. Being self-employed may seem overwhelming at
times, but in the long run, you’ll realize that that the benefits far outweigh the
disadvantages.
Firstly, one of the advantages of being your own boss is that you are in charge of
your earnings. This means that there's no limit when it comes to how much you can get
paid. You can keep all your profit, down to the last cent. That's what is different between
being your own boss or being just an employee: your salary can get higher as long as
your business is growing. Another advantage is that you are in control of your decisions.
You can decide whatever you want about your business. Nobody can tell you how to
invest your money or tell you how to execute your job.
The best advantage, in my opinion, is that you can choose your own working
hours. It means that you can work very hard one day, and the next day you can stay home
and relax. In this context, it's about efficiency and productivity. You can decide when to
go to work and when to leave.
Besides, if you did not show at work one day, no one can fire you. That's the beauty of
being your own boss: you are in charge of every decision.

Secondly, being your own boss can have disadvantages too. One of the most
stressful disadvantages is that you'll do most of the grunt work. It means that, if you are at
the very beginning of your business, you will give to work day and night. From this point
of view, this is one of the biggest disadvantages. You will have to create an image for

your business, to pay for the material and the utilities. In other words, you will be
responsible for things that you never had to worry about when you had a boss.
Another disadvantage is that everything depends on you. Your business will start
when you do but also stop in the second you did. You will have to keep on track your
employee and everything that's keeping your business grows.
In this part, if something happens to you, your business will be affected, and also
your employee's jobs. If your business falls, not only you will suffer. That's why having a
business is hard because not everyone is open to risks.

Finally, in my opinion, being your own boss means taking risks, hard-working
and confident.
As I said above, there's a lot of advantages, but it comes in the package with a lot of
responsibility, not only for the business but also for the people that you choose to work
with you. If you want to start a business and get away from all the bosses that you had,
you need to have a good start-up plan and be open to risks.
