Hints:
(a) (50%) Find the Circular pitch Pc and then base pitch Pb, pitch diameter then pitch
radius for the Pinion (dp, rp) and the Gear (dg, rg). Then, find the Addendum a, and
the Center distance C (you can find the way to calculate C by investigating Figure
11-5).
(b) (50%) Use equation (11.2) to find Z, and then Use equation (11.7a) to find the
contact ratio.

Hints:
(a) (50%) The tooth number, diametral pitch of the pinion and the gear is not
changed. However, the pitch diameter is changed by the same percentage. Find
the new pitch diameter and then the pitch radius.
(b) (50%) When the centers are moved apart the base circle diameters don’t change
but the new pitch circle diameters are defined by the intersection of the new line
of action, which is always tangent to the two circles, with the line of centers. So
we have
rbp
Cos new
r
p new
where rbp is the base radius of the Pinion, (rp)new is the new pitch radius of the
Pinion. You can use the correspondent parameters of the Gear to calculate . The
result is same.

Hints: Assume the gears will be cut with a hob and the pressure angle is 25o.

(a) (20%) For equal stages, find the stage ratio. m m n
Gs G
(b) (50%) The minimum number of teeth that we can have without interference on a
25-deg gear cut with a hob is 14. Try pinions with 14, 15, 16, etc. teeth to see if
the mating gear will have close to an integral number of teeth.
(c) (30%) Step b has a result which can provide a gear train close to the 47:1 ratio.
However, there is another solution which is even closer to 47:1. However, such
solution might not be the best choice in real life situation. For example, it might
cost more.

(a) (20%) From Figure 11-16 we see that the diameter of the ring gear is equal to the
sum of the diameter of the sun gear and two times of the diameter of the planet
gear. Since sun, planets and the ring gear must have the same diametral pitch, …
(b) (50%) Choose the sun gear as the first gear and the ring gear as the last. Use
equation (11.11c), solve for the ring speed, s.
(c) (20%) The ratio between the arm and the sun is a / s.

Hints:
(b) (30%) Choose the sun gear as the first gear and the ring gear as the last, use
equation (11.11c), solve for the planet speed.
(c) (60%) Calculate the torque on the sun and arm shaft.
