Introduction
Earth Leakage Current give rise to generation of heat and result in progressive failure of insulation, which leads to earth faults sparking flashovers,
deterioration of earthing and finally results into catastrophic fires which destroys costly equipments, gadgets and precious lives. It is therefore
essential to detect earth leakage current well before they cross the threshold limits and isolate the circuit in the event of leakages. Conventional over
current and short circuit protection device are not designed to detect earth leakage currents
Make Earth Leakage Relays (ELR) with Core Balance Current Transformer (CBCT) are used to detect the leakage current in an Electrical
TM

Power System. ELR transmits a signal to activate the trip coil of the MCCB / ACB / OCB / CONTACTOR in the event of earth leakage, resulting in
automatic isolation of the electrical power system. ELR have been widely used and accepted because these have field adaptability and are economic.

Principle of Operation
ELR employs a Core Balance Current Transformer (CBCT) to sense the leakage current. The CBCT is mounted externally and load current carrying cable
are passed through the CBCT. Ideally in a leakage free system the incoming and outgoing currents are equal and opposite in direction, which means
that the vector sum of three phase currents is zero and can be expressed as :
IR + IY + IB = 0 for 3 phase 3 wire system.
IR + IY + IB + IN = 0 for 3 phase, 4 wire system.

For the above condition the CBCT produces zero resultant magnetic flux keeping the system healthy.

TM

In case of Earth leakage either due to insulation failure of direct line to ground fault, the vector sum of currents is not zero and therefore
generates resultant magnetic flux in the CBCT, and the signal is fed to the electronic circuit of ELR. This signal is compared with internal
reference determined by the selected position of the leakage current scale in the front facia of the relay, this engergizes the output when the
signal crosses the preset level. The potential free contacts of the relay is connected to the Shunt Trip / NO volt coil of the main trip device like
MCCB / OCB / ACB / CONTACTOR etc., Under fault condition the output relay gets activated by cutting off or tripping against Earth Leakage /
Faults. It is worthwhile to emphasize that the unequal / unbalanced loading on the phases does not effect the vector sum and as such there is
no difficulty in the use of ELR on electrical distribution systems with unbalanced loading.

termination for healthy indication & fault indication, this feature is help ful in observing the indications at a distance. CBCT test facility is
useful in checking the healthyness of the relay including the CBCT. CBCT test is achieved by means of operating the CBCT test-key in front
fascia. External test & reset are also brought out so that the relay can be tested externally. Tapping for different auxiliary voltage this feature
helps in using the ELR at different supply voltages.

EARTH LEAKAGE RELAY FOR NON-LINEAR LOADS LIKE UPS, INVERTOR, DRIVES & OTHER APPLICATIONS

H-series ELR : TM

manufactures the most trusted/dependable earth leakage relays for more than 15 years and they are time tested
“H” series earth leakage are different from other normal leakage relays. The term H denotes harmonics, Prok dv’s make H series is suitable for
electrically noisy environment. Power distribution systems are becoming non-linear this necessitates the earth leakage detection system to
be more effective in handling harmonics & to prevent spurious/nuisance tripping of earth leakage relay due to high frequency harmonics
[predominantly 3rd & 4th harmonics ). H series relay achieves the above harmonic discrimination by using a built in attenuation mechanism
which effectively prevents harmonics to influence the characteristics quantity (leakage current), hence preventing the nuisance tripping of
ELR. The design of H-series CBCT has been modified, CBCT dimensions are different from regular ELR & CBCT.
