Experiment # 7:

Objective:
To cut the given MS piece into required dimensions (50*50*6mm) on Hacksaw Machine.

Apparatus:
1. Power hacksaw
2. Power hacksaw blade
3. Spirit level
4. Scriber
5. Steel rule

Theory:
Power Hacksaw Machine:
The power hacksaw machine provides a vise for clamping the work and means for reciprocating a
U-shaped frame on which is mounted a straight steel hacksaw blade that cuts when moving in one
direction only. The saw presses down on the work during the cutting stroke but is raised clear of
the work during the return stroke.

Base:
The base of the saw usually contains a coolant reservoir and a pump for conveying the coolant to
the work. The reservoir contains baffles which cause the chips to settle to the bottom of the tank.
A table which supports the vise and the metal being sawed is located on top of the base and is
usually referred to as part of the base.
Vise:
The vise is adjustable so that various sizes and shapes of metal may be held. On some machines
the vise may be swiveled so that stock may be sawed at an angle. The size of a power hacksaw is
determined by the largest piece of metal that can be held in the vise and sawed.
Frame:
The frame of the saw supports and carries the hacksaw blade. The machine is designed so that the
saw blade contacts the work only on the cutting stroke. This. action prevents unnecessary wear on
the saw blade. The cutting stroke is on the draw or back stroke.

Procedure:

1. Collect the tools

2. Fix the power hacksaw blade properly as per the direction
3. Prepare the coolant oil.
4. Mark the work piece into required dimensions.
5. Fix the work piece into power hacksaw.
6. Check the perpendicularity of the work piece using spirit level.
7. Tight the work piece rigidly.
8. Switch on the machine and cut the work piece into required dimensions.
9. Apply coolant oil while cutting.
10. Switch off the machine after working
11. Clean the machine after working.

Result: The required size of MS plate is obtained

Precautions:
1. Fix the power hacksaw blade properly as per the direction.
2. Fix the work piece into power hacksaw carefully.
