Practical Session – 8: CAD Modelling and Motion Analysis of an

Automotive Suspension System

(Week 11)

Workbook
Objectives:

 To understand how to conduct a typical process on CAD modelling and force analysis of an
automotive suspension system

Activities:

 Use SolidWorks (SW) and ANSYS Workbench (WB) to perform the following three tasks:
o Prac Task A: CAD modelling of the automotive suspension system
o Prac Task B: Force analysis of the automotive suspension system
o Prac Task C: Identification of contact pairs in ANSYS WB via importing the
assembly from SW

Note:

 Prac 8 workbook is a part of the CAE Project.

 You are required to finish this blank workbook for a team work and only upload one
filled-in workbook per team to the vUWS site at the end of Prac 8.

Instructions:

 You are required to assemble the parts created by each member to an assembly for CAD modelling as
a team in Task A and then conduct a force analysis to extract the forces applied in these parts in Task
B. In Task C, the team will identify contact pairs in ANSYS WB via importing the SolidWorks
assembly properly to get ready for the next step of FEA as required.
Practical Task A: CAD Modelling of the Automotive Suspension System (2 marks)

In this task you are required to assemble the parts and/or sub-assemblies you have created with your team
members for you automotive suspension system.
A Describe the details of the parts and/or sub-assemblies created by your team members (such as name, sizes,
materials, authors, functions, etc.). You may use screenshots to help show the details.
Practical Task B: Force Analysis of an Automotive Suspension System (2 marks)
In this task you are required to carry out a force (stress) analysis, i.e., static structural analysis using ANSYS
WB or a theoretical force analysis, by idealising this automotive suspension system as a simple structure such as
a truss structure made of structural steel.
B.1 Mathematical or FE modelling of the automotive suspension system (You may use screenshots to help
show the details):

B.2 Outcomes from the force (stress) analysis to extract the forces applied at each part in the assembly (You
may use screenshots to help show the details):
Practical Task C: Identification of contact pairs in ANSYS WB via importing the
assembly from SW (1 mark)

In this task you are required to import the SolidWorks assembly to ANSYS WB and create a static analysis
project to only check the contact pairs and describe the contact pairs you found (You may use screenshots to
help show the details):
