Junior Service Essay

Over the course of the last year, I completed 20 plus hours of service at 4 different
volunteering events. This included the 2017 Pittsburgh Marathon Expo, Christmas on Troy Hill,
the March for Life, and the St. Kilian Fish Fry.

The first place I worked was the Pittsburgh Marathon expo. Me and many other
students helped by preparing the bags of information and other goodies that were being given to
all registered runners. This affected my by showing me how much work it takes for a big event
like the Pittsburgh Marathon to be put on, and how many people are essential to making it
happen. My volunteering helped the organizers of the event to make the marathon a success.

Next, I volunteered at Christmas on Troy Hill. While there, I worked at the games area,
where I played games with all of the kids. I also worked at the dessert table in the cafeteria and
worked as a doorman at one of the exits. This affected me by showing me how fortunate I am
with all of the blessings I am so fortunate to have been given. This service helped the less
fortunate families who are not able to afford Christmas on their own.

Next, I was one of many who attended the March for Life. There, we marched in
protest of abortions. It was a big success, as over 800,000 people were in attendance. This
affected me by showing me how wrong abortions really are. This service helped unborn babies
as well as women who feel pressure to abort their unborn babies.
Lastly, I volunteered at the St Kilian Fish Fry on two different days. On the first day, I
worked at the fryers, where I cooked fish and French fries. On the second day, I washed dishes.
This service helped those who may not be able to afford to eat at expensive seafood restaurants
on Fridays during lent a cheap option to still keep their Friday’s meat- free.
