Community Service Essay

Throughout this year, I completed 20 service hours. The first service I completed was

at St Kilian’s for bingo. While there I helped with the games and worked at concessions. I chose

to work there because I needed service hours and I thought it would be rewarding. This service

benefited the people who came to play, because older people are not able to get out and have fun

as much. It showed me to be more selfless and to try to help others enjoy their lives.

The second service I did was setting up for Christmas on Troy Hill. There, I cleaned

tables and chairs and I set up the decorations. I chose to do this because I wanted to help give the

less fortunate children a good Christmas. I’ve always been lucky to have a wonderful Christmas

so it was nice to help others have a nice one too. It helped to show me that it is important to help

out the less fortunate as much as I can.

The last place I worked at was at St Kilian’s fish fry. I worked there on four different

occasions. While there, I served soup, took out trash, did dishes, and helped clean up. I chose to

do this because I had done it several times before and I really enjoyed seeing the parish working

together and the community out enjoying themselves. This service was a way to give people food

that wasn’t meat since it was on Fridays during lent. It helped me learn that it is important to
serve others. Overall, my community service has helped me become a more selfless person and it

has given me the desire to help others who are less fortunate, older or a part of my community.
