Service Project Essay

Over the past year, I completed over 40 hours of community service, most of
which consisted of the mission trip to Jamaica that I was a part of. I raised up about
$1400 through donations, and midway through July of last summer, I, along with many
others from school, spent a week doing service in Jamaica.

During our stay, we stayed in a very large Baptist church that was in the middle
of being renovated. There were several different ways in which we served the
community throughout the week we were there. First, we set up a sports camp for the
kids who lived in nearby areas. We set up games in several sports, including soccer,
baseball, football and many more. This benefited the kids by showing them how to play
sports that perhaps they had not played before. It also gave them something to do that
would help keep them out of trouble. Next, we visited an infirmary. While there, we
visited with all of the residents. This benefitted them because we gave them much
desired company that they do not often get. We also visited an orphanage that housed
mentally and physically disabled children. During our few short hours there, we visited
and played with all of the children. This benefited them because they do not often have
visitors, and have no one to play with. The last service we did was helping with
renovations in the church. We worked on building a staircase, painting the walls and the
roof, and cleaning the inside of the church. This service was beneficial because we
helped bring the church one step closer to being completed. Overall, I feel that my
service in Jamaica was beneficial to many people throughout the community.

The other service I completed was helping out at the school’s open house. I
volunteered at the soccer table, where I gave information about the team to those who
were interested. Our goal was to get as many people as we can to join in order to
further build up the team. This was beneficial to the kids who were interested in joining
the team by giving them information about the team. This was also beneficial to the
school because the team could potentially draw in more students.

Although I was unable to do any service projects throughout the year due to
my two surgeries, I still feel that I have completed a fair amount of service and I will
volunteer even more next year.
