HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The Municipality of Kapalong was named after the nearby tongue


"makapalong", which signifies, "can put out the flame". The Aetas and Mandaya
are the early pioneers of the woodland regions of this district. The Municipality
was initially made out of barangays Maniki, Abaca, Tibal-og, Semong, Mabantao,
Florida, Sua-on and Gupitan. The progression of time, different declarations and
distinctive pioneers caused redefinition of the regional purview of Kapalong.
From that point, fourteen (14) barangays include this region, to be specific: (1)
Maniki, (2) Pag-asa, (3) Luna, (4) Sampao, (5) Mamacao, (6) Gabuyan, (7) Semong,
(8) Katipunan, (9) Tiburcia, (10) Capungagan, (11) Mabantao, (12) Florida, (13) Sua-
on, and (14) Gupitan (being the biggest).

Kapalong is pervasively a country zone subdivided into 14 barangays that are


spread over a land territory of 83,001 hectares. The major monetary movement of
the town is farming. Exchange and trade are negligible and for the most part
moved in the town appropriate. The immense and prolific place that is known for

Kapalong is otherwise called "The Caving Capital of Mindanao" and

MUNICIPAL PROFILE

VERIABLE BACKGROUND

Kapalong turned into a customary region on August 1, 1948 by temperance of


Executive Order No. 151 issued by then President Elpidio Rivera Quirino. The
Municipality's name came after the neighborhood tongue "makapalong", which signifies,
"can put out a flame". The Aetas and Mandayas are the early pilgrims of the woods
zones of this region. Initially named a second rate class region, it has been renamed to
a top notch district with the usage of the Republic Act 7160 also called the Local
Government Code of 1991.

GEOPHYSICAL FEATURES

The Municipality of Kapalong, is situated in the north western piece of the

the Agusan del Sur, on the east by Compostela Valley Province, on the south
by the regions of Asuncion and Sto. Tomas, while on the west by the
Municipality of Talaingod and the Province of Bukidnon. It has an absolute zone
of 83,001 hectares of grounds covering the 29.69% of the land territory of the
area which is 317, 200 hectares.

CLIMATE

Type IV climate characterized by rainfall more or less evenly distributed throughout


the year. Annual rainfall ranges from 2,000 to 3,000 mm and highest precipitation
normally occurs during the month of January ranging from 200 to 400 mm.

TOPOGRAPHY

The Northern area encompasses moderate to rugged terrain with minor wide
valleys. The Southern area consists of the mountainous and lowland terrains.
Mountainous terrain exhibits moderate topography while the lowlands are flat
gently rolling topography. Highest peak of the municipality is locally known as the
Pantaron Mountain Range with an elevation of 1,460 meters.
GEOMORPHOLOGY

As mentioned earlier, the northern part of the municipality is within the Mindanao
Central Cordillera, which is characterized by a general moderate to rugged
topography and active slope processes such as erosion and landslides. Smaller
alluvial plains were also developed and generally confined along Libuganon and
Kapalong Rivers.

The southern part of the municipality belongs to the Agusan-Davao lowlands,


which could be further, subdivided into Central Mountain Range and Kapalong-
Tagum lowlands. The Central mountain Range includes Barangays Sua-on and
Gupitan Poblacion. This is characterized by moderate topography and also active
slope processes. The rest of the municipality belongs to the KapalongTagum
Lowlands, which is generally characterized by wide alluvial plains and flat to gently
sloping topography. Fluvial process such as flooding, bank erosion and deposition
is the main geomorphic process operating in this area.

In 1950 -1960 Libuganon River once became major route in transporting of


products using mechanize bangka, downstream to Pagsabangan then to Tagum.
Early settlements were established along Libuganon River and carried on until
current times. Roads and bridges were constructed as early as mid of 1960’s by
logging concessionaires, also began the massive deforestation of the once virgin
forest of Kapalong.

cavers or guided educational tours/visits). It is located near Kapunit Cave and
Sayaw.
