Mission statement: Our team seeks to thoroughly review and synthesize findings from existing
research, in order to supplement the background section of a journal article regarding our lab’s
recent work on chronic inflammation.
SUMMARIZE SOURCES

❏ STEP 5: (DRAFT SUMMARY SOURCE 2)
❏ STEP 6: (ASSEMBLE KEY IDEAS SOURCE 4)

❏ STEP 8: (ASSEMBLE KEY IDEAS SOURCE 5)
❏ STEP 9: (DRAFT SUMMARY SOURCE 4 & 5)
★ STEP ONE: REFERENCE CHARTER: Ensure the conflict is more than a simple
misunderstanding of expectations.
★ STEP TWO: DETERMINE DEGREE OF SEVERITY: Will one of you absolutely die if this
isn’t solved immediately, or can you wait a few days while the other party sorts this out on
their own time? Is this going to make or break the project, or are you willing to miss a few
points over it?
★ STEP THREE: DISCUSS PLAN OF ACTION: Outline active steps to be taken towards a
compromise or, ideally, complete resolution of conflict. Steps should be tangible and
achievable within a given timeline. BOTH parties should participate in the plan of action,
even if one feels they have contributed very little to the actual conflict. It takes two to
tango.
★ STEP FOUR: AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION. Identify root source of conflict (clash of
personal goals/interests, lack of time investment/management, miscommunication, &tc.).
Identify other conflict(s) that could later arise from the same source. Plan for such
conflict(s) and construct a generalized Plan of Action to reference in the future. Add this
plan to the charter section (as needed).
*If these steps are undertaken and revealed unsuccessful, or if the steps are (for whatever reason)
unable to be undertaken at all, an appointment will be made with the professor to have her mediate conflicts.
Missed deadlines:
There are two sets of deadlines offered to team members. There is a soft deadline, by which
completion of the designated tasks would be ideal. If this soft deadline is missed, there is a one-week
grace period before the arrival of the hard deadline, by which completion of the assignment is required.
For a deadline to be considered met, the work must be ‘Proficient’ or above in quality (see
individual assignment rubrics for specific standards). If the work does not meet these standards, the
deadline will be considered missed.
If a member becomes aware that they will be unable to meet a deadline, be it soft or hard, they
should notify the others as soon as possible. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should a deadline be
missed without notifying another team member in advance.
If a soft deadline is missed, the group may fall slightly out of sync with goal-completion for
a few days or weeks; this is a minor inconvenience and team members will discuss strategies to
return to scheduling equilibrium if feasible. If returning to equilibrium is not feasible, members will
discuss strategies to ensure there is no danger of missing a hard deadline in the future. Root
source of conflict for the missed deadline will be identified and, if possible, compensated for. If the
root source of conflict is non-negligible, a potential redistribution of responsibilities and
expectations will be discussed.
If a hard deadline is missed, this means there must have been some sort of emergency
or non-negligible root cause that neither member could control. The member missing a hard
deadline will have already informed the other members of this issue and the team will construct
an immediate plan of action to ensure the OVERALL assignment remains on track. NOTE: HARD
DEADLINES ARE STRUCTURED IN SUCH A WAY THAT THERE IS A 3-DAY GRACE
PERIOD TO MAKE UP WORK FROM A SINGLE MISSED DEADLINE. If a member still cannot
make up the work from a missed hard deadline in three days, or if a hard deadline is missed more
than once, responsibilities will be redistributed amongst other group members to ensure the
project will still be completed in a timely fashion.
