Lake Toba

Long, long, long ago, there was a boy who roamed around the world. He
stayed near a river. One afternoon, he fished near the river and got a very big fish.
He felt happy and surprised.

Then he brought it home. The fish changed into a beautiful woman. And
the scales of fish became gold coins. They got married. The boy promised not to
tell the origin of his wife to other people.

They had a son but he was very naughty and lazy. Once, The son was
ordered to send meal to his father who was working in the farm. On the way the
son ate some of the meal and left the rest for his father. Thus, his father got angry
so he hit his son and said, “ How naughty you are. No wonder, you are really a
fish child!” the son told his mother what his father had said. The woman was sad
because her husband had broken his promise.

Finally, the woman went away and jump into the river. When the woman
jumped into the river, it was raining heavily. The river was flooded. Then the area
around the river became a large lake. Peopke call it Lake Toba.

Malin Kundang

Long time ago, in a small village near the beach in west Sumatra, a woman
and her son lived. They were Malin Kundang and her mother. Malin Kundang
was a healthy, dilligent, and strong boy. He usually went to sea to catch fish and
sold them to the town.

One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing, he saw a merchant’s ship
which was being raided by a small band of pirates. He helped the merchant. With
his brave and power, Malin Kundang defeated the pirates. The merchant was so
happy and thanked to him. In return the merchant asked Malin kundang to sail
with him. To get a better life, Malin Kundang agreed. He left his mother alone.

Many years later, Malin Kundang became wealthy. He had a huge ship
and was helped by many ship crews loading trading goods. Perfectly he had a
beautiful wife too. When he was sailing his trading journey, his sheep landed on a
beach near a small villlage. An old woman ran to the beach to meet the new rich
merchant. She was Malin kundang’s mother.

Unfortunately, when the mother came, Malin Kundang denied that old
lonely woman was his mother. At last Malin Kundang said to her “ enough, I have
never had a mother like you.

After that he ordered his crews to set sail. She cursed Malin Kundang that
he would turn into a stone if he didn’t apologize. In the quiet sea, suddenly a
thunderstorm came. His huge ship was wrecked and it was too late for Malin
Kundang to apologize. He fell on a small island. Suddenly, he turned into a stone.

TIMUN EMAS (GOLDEN CUCUMBER)


Once upon a time, there lived a childless widow. Near her village lived a
giant who offered her help by giving her a child, on one condition that she would
return the child to him when the child was 6 years old. The widow agreed and the
giant gave her a cucumber seed to plant.
In two weeks, the cucumber started to bear fruits and there was a very big
one in which she found a cute baby girl. She was very happy and named the baby
TimunEmas.
When TimunEmas was 6 year old, she became a very beautiful and clever
young girl. The giant asked the widow to fulfil her promise but she refused. She
really cared for her and asked him to come back two year later. However, after
two year, the widow sent TimunEmas to GunungKidul (Southern Mountain) to
meet a powerful hermit. The hermit gave her four small packages contained
cucumber seeds, needles, salt, and terassi (shrimp paste).
One morning, when the giant came, the widow ordered TimunEmas to run
through the back door. When the giant was chasing her, she dispersed the
cucumber seeds from the package and they suddenly became cucumber field. He
stopped chasing her to eat the cucumber. When he started chasing again,
TimunEmas threw away needles which became bamboo field. Bamboos, then,
wounded the gian’s feet. Then, she dispersed the salt, which then became a sea of
mud which swallowed the giant until death. After his death, TimunEmas could
live happily with her mother.

Once upon a time in java island there was a king named sulahkromo. The
prime minister of king has named radensidopekso. Prime minister’s wife has
named sritanjung. She is so beautiful, so Sulahkromo wanted to marry her.

One day, the king sent the prime minister for long missions. While the
prime minister went, the king tried to get Sri tanjung. But the king failed. He was
very angry. So,whenSidopekso back, the king told him that his wife was
unfaithful to him. Sidopekso was very angry with his wife. Sri tanjung said that it
was not true. However, Sidopekso said that he would kill her. He took her to the
river bank.

Before he killed and threw her into the river, she said that she will be
proven innocent once sidopekso kill her, she threw her body into the dirty river.
River soon become clean and start spreading the wonderful aroma and very
fragrant. Sidopekso said,’’...................BanyuWangi............BanyuWangi’’. it
means ‘fragrant water’. Banyuwangi proof of love born of noble and sacred.
That’s the origin of the town of banyuwangi.
