Dillon’s Adventure
Upon waking up, Dillon found himself lying on a stretch of sandy shore with his face half-
buried in the sand. The rays of the sun beat down on his face blinding him for a second. When he
regained his sight, he found, to his horror, that his clothes had been almost torn apart. They
looked like rags. His limbs ached and his body was covered with bruises. He pulled himself
together and tried to stand up. Before he could steady himself, he was brought to his knees by
exhaustion. As he lay on the sand, he began to scan the environment for signs of human
habitation. But the area seemed barren except for a few coconut trees and a few shrubs
scattered here and there.
He remembered how, a few hours before, he had still been struggling for survival in the
vast South China Sea. The boat that had carried his friends and him out to sea for a fishing trip
had run into a terrible storm. Mr. Hayden, who was the captain of the vessel and had been at the
wheel, lost control of the boat. The boat had been tossed violently from side to side in the storm.
Suddenly, it had hit a sharp object, most probably a protruding rock from the sea, and was
wrecked.
Dillon could not recall how he had managed to drift onto land. However, he was very
thankful that he was still alive. He sat on the beach and looked around. He couldn’t see his
friends. He was saddened by the fact that they might have all drowned. Then he began looking
around for some source of help.
He had almost given up hope of ever finding people when he suddenly spotted a thin
column of smoke on the far side of a ridge, which was almost hidden from view. "Could it be
a mirage?" Dillon asked himself. Even if it was, it gave him some fresh hope of surviving the
terrible ordeal that he was going through. Though weak and drained, he struggled on towards the
place the smoke was rising from.
After plodding on for what seemed like hours in the scorching heat, he found himself
standing at the top of a hill. From there, he saw a little green valley speckled with a few huts and
coconut trees. His eyes were not playing tricks on him. There was a village located at the bottom
of the valley. The sight gave Dillon renewed vigour. He began to run to the village with his last
ounce of energy.
