EDU5109- Gradual Release Lesson

March 1, 2019

1) List the Objective(s)

Objective: Students will be able to create a pair of Mickey Mouse Ears.

Evidence: Students will create their own Mickey Mouse Ears independently. Students will

define the key academic language through the use of an exit slip.

New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy:

Reading Standards for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects 6-12: Key Ideas and Details:

3. Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements,

or performing technical tasks.

2) List key academic language

Language will be introduced after the agenda and objectives are discussed. Students will be

asked to define the words at the end of the lesson in an exit slip.

Mickey Mouse Ears- Headbands that look like Mickey Mouse’s ears that are typically worn for

dress up or in the Disney Parks

Ear Pieces- The foam pieces that will make the ears on the headband.

3) Introduction (Hook, anticipatory set, bell ringer)

Students will be given a one minute quick write to list as many Disney characters as they

possibly can. The teacher will put the students on the clock for one minute and give a 10 second

warning (transition). After the activity, the teacher will share the agenda and the objective for the
day. The teacher will lead a discussion about how any Disney character can be the inspiration for

a pair of Mickey Mouse Ears.

4) Development/Teaching/ I Do It and We Do It

The teacher will put the step by step instruction on the board for the Mickey Mouse Ears. As the

teacher is going through the steps, a slide outlining each step with a picture of the step will be put

on the board (Visual). The teacher will show the steps in order at the front of the class, stating

the step as they do it (Auditory, Visual). The teacher will begin by showing the students the

materials that will be used. After gathering the materials, the next step is adhering the foam

pieces that make the ears to the headband. The teacher will go over the safety of using the glue

gun. After the ears are attached, the teacher will model the possible personalization that can be

done to make the ears represent the desired character. The teacher will then start a second set of

Ears to go through the directions with the students help. The teacher will ask the student what

step comes next while the teach models the steps (CFU- Instructions/Informal) (Auditory,

Visual).

5) Guided Practice with Feedback and Correctives/ You Do It Together

The teacher will ask the student to get into groups of 3. The teacher will use flexible pairing to

organize the students into groups of three randomly. The students will be given cards with well

known Disney characters on them and will find their partners based on the characters all being in

the same movie. The students will be asked to create a pair of ears as a group, going through all

the steps (CFU-Informal) (Kinesthetic). Once in the groups, the teacher will ask the students to

repeat the directions (CFU- Instructions). The teacher will put the students on the clock for three
minutes and give them a one minute warning (transition). The teacher will walk around to the

groups to use proximity to monitor progress and provide feedback and correctives if needed.

6) Provide a brief self-assessments and review of results

The teacher will prompt students to complete the “Bump in the Road” activity. Students will be

asked to write down two to four points where they hit a bump in the road or struggled. After they

complete that, they will be asked to come up with an idea of how they can overcome these

struggles. The teacher will ask the students to repeat the directions (CFU- Instructions). The

teacher will put the students on the clock for two minutes and give them a one minute warning

(transition).

7) Independent Practice/You Do It Alone

The students will be asked to create their own pair of Mickey Mouse Ears independently by

following the instructions that have been enforced throughout the lesson (CFU-Formal). The

teacher will ask the students to repeat the directions to make sure all students understand what is

asked of them (CFU-Instructions). Students will be asked to create their Mickey Mouse Ears and

follow the instructions to adhere them to the headband. Students have the ability to personalize

their Ears to a character that they listed in the hook activity. The teacher will put the students on

the clock for five minutes and be able to make time adjustments as necessary and provide a one

minute warning (transition). If students finish early, the students will be given a Disney word

search to work on for the remaining time (anchor).

8) Closure

The students will be asked to fill out an exit slip containing the definition of Mickey Mouse Ears

and Ear Pieces. (CFU-Formal Formative).

9) Review

Every first Monday of the month will be Mickey Mouse Ear Monday. Students will be asked to

design a new pair of ears to be hung around the classroom.
