29. An automobile tire is inflated to 32Psig pressure at 50˚F. After being driven, the
temperature rises to 75˚F. Determine the final gage pressure assuming the volume
remains constant.
Given:
P1 = 32 psig
T1 = 50 ˚F +460 = 510 R
T2 = 75 ˚F + 460 = 535 R
Required:
P2 = ?
Solution:
P1/ T1 = P2/ T2
P2 = P1 T2/ T1
P2 = (32psig + 14.696 psi) ( 535˚R) / 510 ˚R
P2 = 48.9850
Gage pressure
P2 = 48.9850 – 14.696
P2 = 34.29 psig
48. A Carnot engine receives 1000 Btu of heat reservoir at an unknown temperature and
rejects 400 Btu of heat to a low-temperature reservoir at 77°F. Determine the (a) the
high temperature; (b) the thermal efficiency.

Given:
QA = 1000 Btu
QR = 400 Btu
T2 = 77°F + 460 = 537°R

Solution:

(a) High temperature

T1 − T2 T1 − 537°R
ⅇ= =
T1 T1

𝑊 1000 − 400
ⅇ= = = 0.6
𝑄𝐴 1000

T1 − 537°R
0.6 =
T1

0.6 T1 = T1 − 537°R

T1 = 1342.5°R − 460

𝐓𝟏 = 882.5°F

(b) Thermal efficiency

T1 − T2 1342.5°R − 537°R
ⅇ= =
T1 1342.5°R

ⅇ = 0.6

ⅇ = 𝟔𝟎%

Check:

𝑄𝑅 400
ⅇ= 1− =1−
𝑄𝐴 1000

ⅇ = 0.6
ⅇ = 𝟔𝟎%
