1.Why do the narrator Sam and his friend Bill Driscoll decide to kidnap the child of
Ebenezer Dorset? Cite specific evidence from paragraphs 3 and 4 in your answer.

Sam and his friend Bill Driscoll decide to kidnap the child of Ebenezer
Dorset because they planned on asking his wealthy father for a ransom. As the
text states, they needed money so they decided that, “a kidnapping project
would do.” This proves that they planned a kidnapping. As the text states, they
chose the son of a wealthy man, Ebenezer Dorset, because they “figured that
Ebenezer would melt down for a ransom of two thousand dollars to a cent.” This
proves that they wanted to kidnap Ebenezer Dorset’s son for money. Sam and
Bill kidnapped Dorset’s child because they wanted him to pay a ransom.

The boy is characterized as having freckles and being mean.

As the text states, he has freckles. This proves that he has freckles.
The text also states, “the kid was on the street throwing rocks at a
kitten.” This proves that he is mean. The boy in the story is
portrayed as having freckles and being mean.
3. In his letter, how does Ebenezer Dorset respond to the kidnappers’ request for
ransom? Draw an inference from the text to explain why he responds in this way.
Support your answer with textual evidence.
Mr. Dorset responds by asking the kidnappers to pay him
$250.00 to return the boy which tells us that he does not really care
about his son. As the text states,“You bring Johnny home and pay
me $250.00 in cash.” This proves that he responded by asking for
them to pay him to return the boy. The text states that he wants
money to take his kid back which we can infer from is that he does
not really care about him. This proves our inference that the dad
does not care for his son and this is the reason why he asked the
kidnappers to pay him. Mr. Dorset responds by asking the
kidnappers to pay him $250.00 to return the boy because, we can
infer, he knows how annoying the kid is.

4. This author uses situational irony frequently. Identify two
examples, and infer why it is situational irony.

Two examples of situational irony include the fact that the

boy had a good time and that the father asked the kidnappers to
pay him to return the boy. As the text states, Aw,
what for?"
says he. "I don't have any fun at home. I hate to
go to school. I like to camp out. You won't take me
back home again, Snake-eye, will you?" This
proves the boy had a good time which is ironic
because we do not expect a victim of kidnapping
to have a good time. The text also states that the
boy’s father wanted the kidnappers to pay him to
take the kid back which is ironic because you
would expect it to be the other way around. This
proves the father asked the kidnappers to pay him
to return the boy. Two examples of situational irony include
the fact that the boy had a good time and that the father asked the
kidnappers to pay him to return the boy.
