Reflective Writing of Service Learning

Staring in October my group members and I got together and decided that our senior
project should positively impact teens in our community. The first thing we did was get
together and start brainstorming some ideas. We made a list of some possible options that we
could pursue. Trying to decide on one senior project idea was really hard because all of our
options seemed like very great ideas. However after discussing some ideas with Ms.Carnes
we decided that our senior project should be a hygiene drive where we donate to a local teen
shelter because it would hit close to home for us. Then we had to start deciding which teen
shelter we wanted to partner up with for the hygiene drive.

We went on google and started looking up local teen shelters that we could partner up
with. Then we came across boys and girls organization and decided to call up the number.
We spoke to this really kind woman and told her about our senior project and the ideas we
came up with. She agreed and was grateful to be teaming up with us. During this time for the
next few months many hygiene drives were taking place making it super competitive to earn
donations. So we held it off for a few months and finally set out our flyers and boxes to
donate in in three locations across the school. We had alyssa hernandez on the morning
announcements inform people about our drive. For the next two weeks our hygiene drive
took place and we were so grateful because we acquired so many donations from people at
our school. Then on May 8th we all decided to carpool and drive there together to donate the
supplies. The woman we spoke to wasn’t there but the receptionist was. We took pictures and
gave them all the donations we collected.

Knowing that we made a difference in our community made all the difference, and
knowing that those boys and girls have more supplies to be confident and feel good is
rewarding. Though we couldn’t see the boys and girls, even individually I feel that they will
be grateful. Impacting my community is a step toward the right direction, especially since
these teens are homeless they tend to get forgotten about because they don’t really have
much support. Maybe we can’t end homelessness but we can make sure they have what they
need to at least feel like they are cared about even in a small way.
