Communication Studies Essay

A family day is the coming together of families and friends of a community to interact
socialise and compete with one another. It is the time of the year again where Eden
Gardens has its highly anticipated annual family day. As public relations officer it is my
duty to raise awareness of this event to attract as much people, mainly adolescents.
Therefore it is my plan to employ certain strategies that utilise proper language registers,
varieties and elements of the communication process to attract as much adolescents to
this event as possible.

There will be several mediums and channels of communication used, by which the target
audience will be reached. Firstly, announcements would be made publicly via the public
address system from cars which will drive around the community. Lower registers would
be used here as most adolescents tend to be simple minded so simple language will be
used, giving them information of the time, venue, purpose and activities of the event.
This will be a useful communication channel as members of the community would be
able to clearly hear the announcements as it is easily accessible.

Secondly, newspaper advertisements would be published bold and colourful. This will be
a written medium of communication utilising formal and informal registers as certain
language are to be and not to be used in the newspapers. Persuasive and appealing
language will be used as well as pictures of the fun activities that will be part of the sports
day. The language would be suitable enough for adolescents to decode and interpret and
providing feedback in the form of attendance.

Thirdly, fliers and posters will be distributed to members of the community as well as it
being stuck on poles, wall etc. for everyone to see. Lower registers would be used and
also informal language to an extent to appeal to the youths of the community to attend the
sports day. These fliers and posters would be as informative, persuasive and attractive as
possible.
Additionally, advertisements will be aired on some radio stations. These will be public
announcements therefore using upper registers and formal language. The advertisements
will give information about the event and encouraging all adolescents especially, to come
out to this anticipated event.

Also, apart from all the planned exciting activities for the event, there will be fantastic
prizes for all winners and even competitors. Since the main target audience is
adolescents, some of these prizes include tablets, video games, sports equipment, bicycles
and much more. With the expectation of these prizes, the adolescents would be keener on
attending this event and to even compete harder.

For an event like this to be a success, it requires planning but most importantly
attendance by the community for participation and interaction. Events like this are
important to promote unity and interaction within the community. Therefore as public
relations officer, using all the substantial funds provided to me, I will try to make this the
best ever family and sports day the community has seen yet.
