• OVERVIEW OF
PHARMACEUTICAL INDIUSTRY

Health is wealth but ailments are indispensable need of human life as well as other life forms.
Medicine is equally important to antagonize the disease. Along with development of new drug
leads to introduction of new procedures and machines for manufacturing and new controlled
methods for accurate definition of drug delivery. All those innovations and improvements
contribute to superior quality drug dosage forms and enhances concomitant production
economics.

Pharmaceutical industry develops , produces, and markets drugs or pharmaceuticals licensed

for use as medications. Pharmaceutical Industries are allowed to deal in generic and/or branded

6
medicines and medical devices. They are subject to a variety of laws and regulations regarding
the patenting, testing and ensuring safety and efficacy and marketing of drugs. The word
“Pharmaceutical” comes from Greek Word Pharmakeia. The modern translation of that is
“Pharmacia”.India is the largest provider of generic drugs globally with the Indian generics accounting for
20 per cent of global exports in terms of volume. Of late, consolidation has become an important
characteristic of the Indian pharmaceutical market as the industry is highly fragmented. India enjoys an
important position in the global pharmaceuticals sector. The country also has a large pool of scientists and
engineers who have the potential to steer the industry ahead to an even higher level. Presently over 80 per
cent of the antiretroviral drugs used globally to combat AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) are
supplied by Indian pharmaceutical firms.he UN-backed Medicines Patent Pool has signed six sub-licences
with Aurobindo, Cipla, Desano, Emcure, Hetero Labs and Laurus Labs, allowing them to make generic anti-
AIDS medicine TenofovirAlafenamide (TAF) for 112 developing countries.

Indian pharmaceutical sector is estimated to account for 3.1 – 3.6 per cent of the global
pharmaceutical industry in value terms and 10 per cent in volume terms. It is expected to grow
to US$100 billion by 2025. The market is expected to grow to US$ 55 billion by 2020, thereby
emerging as the sixth largest pharmaceutical market globally by absolute size. Branded generics
dominate the pharmaceuticals market, constituting nearly 80 per cent of the market.

7
OBJECTIVES OF TOUR

I. To study engrossed with comprehensive information of

pharmaceutical processing.

II. To study various unit processes and basic industrial set-up line.

III. To inoculate the desire of field knowledge amongst the students

so that they can prepare themselves to work with field officials

arrangement did not work out and in early 1847, a fund was raised by means of donations and
subscriptions with a view to forming a horticultural society and a public garden.
