LITERACY ASSESMENT

PORTFOLIO

Overview of the student
This grade one student was very interested in doing the literacy assessment with me,
and her positive attitude and confidence showed me she was ready for it. Before beginning
the assessment, I used the reading interest survey to get to know her better as a reader. The
student said she enjoys reading and she thinks she is a good reader because she reads books
almost every day. She reads more at home than at school because she likes reading books
to her mom and her little sister. Her favorite books are about bugs, dogs, and cats. She
prefers to read with her friends rather than alone because she likes being with them. When
she comes to a word she doesn’t know how to read, she always asks her mom for help,
indicating great support at home. From this survey, I came to the conclusion that this
student has a love for reading and she has grown up in a home environment in which
literacy is valued. The literacy support she gets from home has developed her interests in
books and positive attitude towards reading.

STRENGTHS STRUGGLES STEPS
Reading assessment & School-Wide Write
Observations
Grade: 1
Strengths Struggles

 phonological awareness –  blend sounds - correctly

proficient in distinguishing first identified “wh”, “ch”, “th”, “sh”,
and last sounds in each word which are the more commonly
 phoneme blending - able to used blends, but didn’t know
hear and manipulate sounds how to blend “kn” and sounded
together and said each word it separately as |k/n|
that was provided  reading record - the reading
 segmentation (phonemes) – section of the assessment was
recognized initial, medial and done at level 5, in which she
final sounds scored a 95 % accuracy rate. I
 letter/ sound correspondence wanted to try higher level
– very familiar with all the books, but she lost focus and
letter sounds got distracted at the end
 overall - went through almost
every section with ease

Next Steps / Strategies

After reviewing this assessment, I feel this student is excellent for her
grade level as she assessed well in almost every section with no error.
She needs to work on blending sounds, especially “kn.” She has a clear
understanding of blends, but she struggled with “kn”. She could practice this
sound by looking at words that start with “kn”: sounds such as knife, knight, knot,
knock, etc. Since she likes reading, she could find a book that has many words
that start with “kn”, which will help her develop blending sounds.
Also, I would like her to continue fostering her love for reading. This could be
done by group reading. Since she likes reading books with her friends, giving her
the opportunity to read with people that are at the same reading level as her will
help her love for reading.
