connected to each other. One of the popular social media at the moment is WhatsApp.
Based on social media ranking in the category of Internet and Telecom> Social Network
created by Similar Web on January 1 2019, WhatsApp ranks 8th. Whereas, for Global
Rank, WhatsApp ranks 30th. WhatsApp acts as an online messenger application that is
currently widely used for various things such as personal chat, community, online
seminars, and so on. This paper will explain the introduction, functions and benefits,
advantages and disadvantages of WhatsApp.

aim of knowing:
1. To find out what WhatsApp is
2. To find out whatsapp function
3. To find out whatsapp advantages.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION
2.1 Introduction
Quoted from WikiPedia, WhatsApp was established on February 24, 2009. WhatsApp
was founded by Brian Acton and Jan Koum who once worked as Yahoo employees.
Capitalizing on the $ 400,000 savings earned during his work there, Koum visited his friend
Alex Fishman to discuss the App Store, which was only 7 months old, Koum felt the store
had potential. Fishman then helped Koum find an iPhone application developer named Igor
Solomennikov from Russia. But even though WhatsApp Inc. has been established, the
WhatsApp application itself is far from ready. In some experiments, WhatsApp crashed and
failed to run as expected. Desperate, Koum intends to close his company and find another
job. But Brian Acton encouraged him to stay a few months away. In the end, after going
through a fairly long beta phase, in November 2009, WhatsApp officially started its work
on the App Store. Previously, Koum had persuaded Acton and five former Yahoo! others
to invest. After visiting the App Store, in January 2010 WhatsApp traveled to the
BlackBerry Store and was followed by Android in August.
Although the status has been changed from free to paid, WhatsApp's popularity
continues to accelerate on almost all platforms. As of February 2013 WhatsApp active users
exploded at 200 million. This figure has doubled in December and increased again to 500
million in April 2014. And as of September 2015, WhatsApp active users were recorded at
900 million. The rapid growth is what makes Facebook crazy about WhatsApp. In response,
WhatsApp Inc. accepted Facebook's proposal with a dowry of $ 19 billion. After changing
the flag, Facebook did not make a lot of changes to WhatsApp, it was still pegged per year
and without advertisements. Not like many people fear.
WhatsApp is an instant messaging application for smartphones, when viewed from its
functionality WhatsApp is almost the same as the SMS application that you normally use
on old cellphones. But WhatsApp doesn't use credit, but internet data. There is no limit, as
long as internet data is adequate. Although it is an instant messaging application, there is
something unique about WhatsApp. So, the contact recognition system, verification and
sending messages are still carried out through cellphone numbers that have been previously
registered. This method is different from BBM that uses a PIN, or LINE, which in addition
to cellphone numbers also supports e-mail, and username.
2.2 Functions

WhatsApp has a function to send text messages, send photos from the gallery or from
the camera, send videos, send office files or others, call through voice, including sending
your voice messages that can be heard by the recipient at any time, sharing location using
GPS, Sending contact cards, WhatsApp also supports several emojis, but for stickers,
WhatsApp is minimalist. Unlike LINE, which is more diligent in developing it, on
WhatsApp, users can also set their own profile panel, consisting of names, photos, status
and some privacy settings to protect profiles and also help tools to backup messages, change
account numbers and make payments

2.3 Advantages

1. Not only text: WhatsApp has a feature to send pictures, videos, sounds and GPS
locations through GPS or Google Maps. The media can be displayed immediately and
not in the form of a link.
2. Integrated into the system: WhatsApp, like SMS, no need to open the application to
receive a message. Notification of incoming messages when the cellphone is off will
still be delivered if the cellphone is on.
3. Status of Message: - Red Clock for loading process on our cellphone - Check if message
is sent to network - Double check mark if message has been sent to friend chat. - Red
cross if the message fails
4. Broadcats and Group chat: Broadcast to send messages to many users. Group chat to
send messages to fellow members of the community.
5. Save Bandwidth: Because it is integrated with the system, it does not need to log in and
load contacts / avatars, so that data transactions become more economical. The
application can be turned off, and only active if there is an incoming message, so it can
save battery life.
6. Delete Messages to Everyone: This new feature is similar to the BlackBerry Messenger
(BBM) "Pull Message" feature that was first released. This feature allows us to delete
or retract messages that have been sent. Initially this feature was only available for beta
users, until it was later released to the public.
2.4 Disadvantages

1. Drain Space Memory

In the WhatsApp Application when you receive an image or audio, you need to
download it. then the file will automatically be stored in your cellphone's memory, of
course this can take up a lot of space or memory space on your cellphone.
2. Drain the Battery
Because the WhatsApp application is always connected to the internet, this application
will be active even if you do not use it, especially when there is an incoming message
or when disconnected to the network where your cellphone will search for networks so
that WhatsApp stays connected to the internet. This is what affects your cellphone
battery quickly run out.
3. Require File Download
Although it does not require a lot of quota in chatting. Both receiving and sending
messages. But not for files. Like photo video, and audio. You are required to download
the files first, then automatically stored in your cellphone's memory. Different from
other applications. You don't need to download it first
