Postgraduate Welcome Pack

Welcome to King’s
Dear Student,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to your online course here at King’s College London.
These programmes are specially designed to provide you with a postgraduate education of
outstanding quality from a world top 20 university.
King’s is the fourth oldest university in England and based in the heart of London. We have more
than 26,000 students from nearly 140 countries, and approximately 7,000 staff members.
Today, you join a community that has included pioneers such as James Clerk Maxwell, Joseph
Lister and Rosalind Franklin, Nobel Prize winners such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Peter
Higgs, and creative geniuses including Thomas Hardy and Virginia Woolf.
We are enormously proud of this heritage and our strong culture of service to society. However,
we are not resting on our laurels; we are always looking to improve and develop. Last year saw
us recognised in the Research Excellence Framework as being 6th in the UK for research ‘power’
and 7th for ‘quality’. It also saw staff and students from King’s Health Partners awarded The
Guardian Prize for their work in Sierra Leone.
I hope you enjoy your time with King’s. It is my belief that you will find your study experience
rich and intellectually fulfilling. We believe the culture at King’s will help you grow as an
interesting individual with the potential to accomplish great things.
Yours sincerely,
Professor Edward Byrne AC
President & Principal, King’s College London

will introduce you to your chosen postgraduate course and have tips on how to get the most out of
your course. It includes a welcome video, educational aims and objectives, detail on study skills and
an introduction to the King’s academic team and community.

Having technical problems?

Should you encounter any difficulties whilst exploring KEATS, please contact your Student
Success Advisor. Should you have trouble with your username or password for KEATS, please
contact our IT Service Desk for assistance.

Studying for your module

We recommend that students set aside 20-22 hours per week for study time during a module.

Taking a break from your studies

Module opt outs
If you have unavoidable commitments outside of your course and need a break, you can speak to
your Student Success Advisor about opting out of a module.
You are permitted to informally opt out of up to three teaching periods in a row. Students must
arrange an opt out with their Student Success Advisor before 12pm on the eighth day of teaching
for that module. If, by this point, you have already paid the module cost, you can either request a
refund or credit your student account to pay for later modules.
Please bear in mind that missing a module may delay your graduation time considerably.
All students should be aiming to graduate within two years.

Interruptions of study
If you need more time off, you can apply for a formal interruption of study for a period of up to
two years. As this would involve formally suspending your studies, an interruption should not be
undertaken lightly. Please have an extensive conversation with your Student Success Advisor to
find out whether it’s right for you.
During a formal study interruption, students would maintain access to KEATS, to any previously
completed modules and to their King’s email accounts. Students are advised to keep in regular
touch with their Student Success Advisor. During an interruption, students are not permitted to
take part in any academic activities such as reassessments.

Please note
- Students that miss three consecutive modules without arranging an opt out with their Student Success
Advisor will be considered withdrawn from the course.
- According to the university’s regulation G10, students may not be registered concurrently for more
than one award within the higher education setting unless dual registration has been permitted.

Managing your money

We want every student on our courses to feel financially safe and comfortable with their obligations
to King’s. Take a read through the information below to get acquainted with payments and learn
about the options and support you have access to.
Your deposit
As part of the offer acceptance process, you paid a deposit. This fee not only secures your place
on the course, but also stands as payment for your first module.
According to the regulations governing distance selling contracts, you have 14 days from the
date that King’s receives your deposit to change your mind and request a refund of the deposit.
After the 14-day period has passed, the deposit is non-refundable. To request a deposit refund
(within the 14-day cooling off period), please contact your Student Success Advisor.
Should you feel it is necessary for you to opt out of your first module, you would have up
until 12pm noon UK time on the eighth teaching day to inform your Student Success Advisor.
Your deposit payment would then be allocated to the next module you were able to take part in.
Paying for modules
From your second module onwards, you will be required to pay course fees on a modular basis.
You will be sent an invoice on the first teaching day of each module. Payment for this invoice
must be received by King’s College London by the fifth teaching day. Students that miss this
deadline will have their KEATS access to the module restricted by the end of the eighth day
of teaching.
Students are automatically enrolled on to the next available module and sent an invoice, so make
sure you discuss your module plans with your Student Success Advisor. They need to be informed
if you’d like to take a break.
Finding your invoices
Your module invoices will be delivered by email to both your King’s IT Account email and your
personal email address. If you can’t find a copy of the email please log in to Student Records and
find your invoices listed under My Fees > Student Fee Details.
Payment methods
You can pay invoices online using a credit or debit card. You don’t need to be the named cardholder.
Please note that American Express is not accepted. We sometimes accept bank transfers in
exceptional circumstances.
Financing
Students from the UK may be eligible for financial assistance from Student Finance England. You
can also acquire funding through institutions such as The Co-Operative Bank by way of a career
development loan.
Most funding options apply only to master’s courses. Should you take on a postgraduate loan, you
will be required to complete the course within three years. Speak to your Student Success Advisor
for more funding options.
Advice and support
Your Student Success Advisor is always ready to help with your queries and concerns about
