EBI GEAR REDUCTIONS PROVIDE FOR EASY INSTALLATION AND REMOVAL . OUR
UNIQUE LOCKING WEDGE SYSTEM PROVIDES FOR ACCURATE PINION TO RACK MESH
ADJUSTMENT.
The GB82 jack case is configured with wedge plates that are welded to the jack case
itself. These wedge plates take all of the vertical jacking load from the gearbox
and transfer them into the jack case. The gearbox mounting flange fits firmly
against the upper edge of the mounting plate.

Welded on inside of mounting plate holes.

Studs fit loosely in the jack case mounting holes. They may be welded to the jack
case in order to aid in gearbox installation. Place bottom edge of stud jig
template firmly against top edge of wedge plate and align with holes in jack case.
Insert studs through jig template leaving equal length on either side of jack case.
Tack weld (3/8” fillet x 1”) center of stud to inside of jack case attaching to
internals of jack case.

Locking wedge system consists of tapered wedges, items 3 and 5 in the Bill of Materials,
that are locked into place by bolts, nuts, and retaining brackets, items 6 and 7. The
retaining brackets are held in place by the 6 mounting studs that hold the box in place.
The studs take no jacking or parting force loads and therefore do not require a high
tightening torque value. (only 1000 ft-lbs)

Wedges are locked in place by hammering lugs inward and securing with bolt and lock nut.

Care must be taken to secure the pinion to the housing when removing bands
holding outboard bearing. Thrust washer inside gearbox may dislodge if pinion
shaft is allowed to move out of housing.

The GB82 is shipped with two lifting eyes for mounting. The unit may
be lifted with one hook in the vertical position and turned
horizontal by lowering one hook and raising another.
A come-a-long may be used to pull the gearbox into position. Units
should be installed starting from the bottom and working upward.
Lifting eyes are removed and hydraulic motor mounted after securing
gearbox to jack case.
Use a hand pump (grease gun) filled with hydraulic oil to pump up the brake to 800 psi or
loosen the motor mount plate bolts to release brake. Turn the pinion gear using the “tee”
handle input gear to align with rack. Mesh into rack using a jack (port-a-power) leaving
5/8 inch clearance between the root of the pinion and the tip of the rack. Be sure that leg is
centered within tower for this adjustment.

Once proper mesh is established and wedges are locked in place, the outboard
bearing shall be installed using the exact same mounting hardware. The
mounting system is identical on each side of the jack case. The outboard bearing
has a spherical bushing to accommodate slight misalignment of the jack case
surfaces. The gearbox side of the jack case may be warped or slightly non-
parallel to the outboard bearing side. Should there be any vertical misalignment,
brass shim material may be used to ensure a tight fit on the outboard bearing. A
tight fit around the gearbox mount plates is essential for eliminating movement
under load. Shim surface

The final step to the GB82 mounting process is the tightening of the six mounting
studs. These studs are to be tightened to a torque of 1000 ft.-lbs. The studs do
provide clamp load, however they also hold the retainer plates that encase the
wedges. There is one stud that does not hold a retainer plate. A washer is
provided for each side of the jack case in order to maintain proper thickness.

GB82 gear reductions are shipped dry. The gear case and brake cavity are lubricated
by 90 weight gear oil. Sight glasses are shipped separately and should be
screwed into the tapped opening on the front cover, just above the brake
housing. The oil level should be indicated on this sight glass. In addition there
are three grease points to lubricate shaft bushings. UNIT MUST BE LUBRICATED
PRIOR TO OPERATION!!

Should there be a need for repair or re-adjustment of pinion to rack mesh due to
wear, the EBI GB82 Gear Reduction provides for this without gouging weld
material and re-welding. The wedge system may be unlocked by following the
reverse process to installation.

This presentation is intended to give an overview of the installation process for the
GB82 gearbox. Common sense practices should be used in handling the units
and care should be taken not to scar machined surfaces should any disassembly
of the unit occur. Certain individual components are heavy and awkward to
handle so it is recommended that proper safe lifting apparatus be used.
