Title: Do Plants Require Sunlight in Order to Create Starch?

Hypothesis: I believe if there is no sunlight shining onto the plants it will make less starch than
a plant with sunlight because sunlight is a necessary component in photosynthesis.

Independent Variable: The presence of paper.

Type of Leaf Uncovered Covered

Number of Tests 3 3

Dependent Variable: The presence of starch, measured by the color of the solution.

Constants:
1. Amount of Ethanol
2. Size of Beaker
3. Temperature of Ethanol
4. Temperature of Water
5. Amount of Water
6. Amount of Iodine

Materials:
● Safety Goggles ● Partially Covered Leaf
● Hot Plate ● Ethanol
● Beakers ● Iodine Solution
● Water ● Standard Lab Equipment

Procedure:
1. Cover one leaf with a piece of paper and leave another one uncovered.
2. Leave them to sit for ~24 hours.
3. Make sure to wear safety goggles and other safety equipment.
4. Fill a beaker with water and put it on a hot plate until they are boiling.
5. Fill 2 more beakers with ethanol. Heat up one and leave the other at room temperature.
6. Dip uncovered leaf into boiling water for 2 minutes in order to kill the cells.
7. Put uncovered leaf into the hot ethanol for 2 minutes then normal ethanol for 1.
8. Pour Iodine solution into room temperature ethanol and record color.
9. Repeat steps 4-8 with covered leaf.
