APMCs

Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) is a statutory market committee constituted


by a State Government in respect of trade in certain notified
agricultural/horticultural/livestock products. Mumbai Agricultural Produce Market
Committee has been established on 15th January, 1977 under the provisions of the
Maharashtra Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation and development) Act, 1963. It is a
Body Corporate under Section 12 of the said Act. Amongst others, main objectives of
establishment of Mumbai APMC are - to develop modern market yards for agricultural
commodities, regulation of marketing of agricultural commodities, help the farmers to fetch
better price for their produce, create infrastructural facilities for orderly development of
trade, to maintain and manage the markets and stipulate conditions for use of markets within
the market area.
APMCs are intended to be responsible for:

 Ensuring transparency in pricing system and transactions taking place in market area;
 Providing market-led extension services to farmers;
 Ensuring payment for agricultural produce sold by farmers on the same day;
 Promoting agricultural processing including activities for value addition in agricultural
produce;
 Publicizing data on arrivals and rates of agricultural produce brought into the market
area for sale; and
 Setup and promote public private partnership in the management of agricultural
markets
Committee:
It consists of elected representatives from farm farmers. Traders, Measurers and Mathadi's.
Also representatives are to be nominated from NMC, BMC & Director of Marketing. Presently
Shri Satish Soni, Additional Commissioner(Cooperation) is working as Administrator in the
place of committee. Since committee is supposed to take decision and supervise its execution.
Market Area:
The Market Area of the Committee comprises of Greater Mumbai, Thane Taluka and 30
Villages of Uran Taluka of Raigad District. In respect of fruit and vegetable commodities
market area is restricted to market yards after the amendment in the Maharashtra
Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation and development) Act, 1963.
