Define screening in hiring process. (2 marks)


The first step of the hiring process, the pooling and ranking candidates with

qualifications, when done improperly, it undermines effective recruitment and invites

injustices into the process.

QUESTION 2
Identify TWO(2) basic principles in the fair handling of disciplinary issues. (4 marks)
 Just cause: requires that reasons for discipline or discharge deal with job
performance.
 Due process: refers to the fairness of procedures used to impose sanctions on
employees.

QUESTION 3

Give definition of sympathetic strike. (2 marks)


Sympathetic strike: Workers who have no particular grievance of their own, and
may or may not have the same employer, decide to strike in support of others.

Identify THREE (3) importance of privacy. (6 marks)


The importance of privacy – Our concern for privacy has three aspects:
1. We want to control intimate or personal information about ourselves and not
permit it to be freely available to everyone.
2. We don’t want our private selves to be on public display.
3. We value being able to make certain personal decisions autonomously.

State THREE (3) issues of privacy interference in the workplace. (6 marks)


Issues of privacy interference in the workplace:
1. Legitimate and illegitimate influence.
2. Involvement in civic activities.
3. Participation in wellness programs. We should seek to maximize happiness, not
only immediately, but in the long run.

Identify THREE (3) several reasons for business using the polygraph test to obtaining
information.
(6 marks)
Polygraph tests: Businesses cite several reasons for using the polygraph test:
1. It is a fast and economical way to verify information provided by job applicants
and screen candidates for employment.
2. It allows employers to identify dishonest employees or job candidates.
3. It eliminates the need for audits and oppressive controls, so may increase
workers’ freedom.

Give THREE (3) importance of job satisfaction in redesign work. (6 marks)

Importance of job satisfaction: The design of work materially affects the total well-being
of workers.
Example: Studies show that job satisfaction is the strongest predictor of longevity.
1. Therefore, work content and job satisfaction are paramount moral concerns.
2. Satisfied workers are also more productive.
3. Business has an economic reason as well as a moral obligation to improve work
quality.

QUESTION 1

a. Briefly explain bribe and kickback. (6 marks)


Bribe: a remuneration for the performance of an act that is inconsistent with the
work contract or the nature of assigned task – can be money, entertainment,
gifts, or preferential treatment.
Kickback: a form of bribery that involves a percentage payment to a person who
is able to influence or control a source of income.

b. Identify TWO (2) points about the relationship between prudential and moral
considerations. (4 marks)
 Exaggerating the costs to ourselves allows us to rationalize away the
damage we are doing to others.
 We have a collective interest in protecting the welfare of society by
encouraging people to act in non-self-interested ways.

QUESTION 2

a. Briefly discuss TWO (2) arguments against affirmative action. (8 marks)


Arguments against affirmative action:
1. It injures white men and violates their rights.
Point: Such programs violate the right of white men to be treated as individuals and
to have racial or sexual considerations not affect employment decisions.
Counterpoint: The interests of white men have to be balanced against society’s
interest in promoting these programs.

Arguments against affirmative action:


2. Affirmative action itself violates the principle of equality.
Point: If equality is the goal, it must be the means, too. Such programs are based on
the same principle that encouraged past discrimination.
Counterpoint: We can’t wish the reality of discrimination away by pretending the
world is colorblind, when it is not.

.b. Give the meaning of the comparable worth. (2 marks)


The meaning of the comparable worth: It says that women and men should be paid on
the same scale – not only for doing the same or equivalent jobs, but also for doing
different jobs involving equal skill, effort, and responsibility.
