Site Visit #2 Reflection

For my second Site Visit, I went on a tour of the National Library of Medicine (What) on

the National Institute of Health (Where) campus on October 19, 2018 (When). I had emailed the

Director of Tour Operations, Tara Mowrey (Who) beforehand, and she was impressed with my

enthusiasm toward the tour and the NLM in general. She gave me useful information regarding

internship and volunteering opportunities at NIH and her tour was relevant and informative. I

chose to go on this tour because the NLM is home to Pubmed, Healthline, and many other

important resources that are invaluable to my research (Why).

Upon entering the campus, I was able to see the wide array of NIH and other government

buildings. The Lister Hill building, where the tour started, was hosting a medical science

conference so I got the opportunity to view to works of many scientists in the field. The actual

tour took me through the various organizations within the NIH, including the NLM, and how

they have developed over the years. I got the opportunity to view the vast online and in-print

collections at the NLM. Finally, near the end of my tour, I met a man named Steve who showed

us historical medical notes and texts from as far back as the Medieval Times.

In conclusion, I had an overall educational and beneficial visit to the NLM and I learned

how easy it is to access medical journals, statistics, and other resources from scientists around

the world. I can also use the information given to me by Ms. Mowrey to find interesting

internship and volunteer opportunities in the medical field.
